Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position for 36 months (3 years) as a Project Manager/Postdoctoral Researcher for “Maximising medication adherence and minimising physician inertia: Lowering to target the blood pressure of older patients with hypertension ‐ A cluster randomised feasibility study in general practice”. This position is funded by the Health Research Board Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Awards (DIFA) scheme and is available from June 2021 to project end date in June 2024. This position will be based in NUI Galway and will involve travel to general practice sites throughout the Galway region. This project is co-led by Professor Andrew Murphy (HRB Primary Care Clinical Trials Network Ireland) and Dr Gerry Molloy (School of Psychology). The overall project aim is to assess the feasibility of a pragmatic cluster randomised controlled trial in primary care of a complex intervention designed to address suboptimal blood pressure levels among older patients, incorporating maximisation of medication adherence and minimisation of physician inertia.
The Project
The proposed programme of work will consist of two main work packages based on the Development and Feasibility phases of the Medical Research Council Framework. The first 12 months will consist of the design, development, and refinement of a complex intervention to maximise patient medication adherence and minimise physician inertia. The second work package (13-36 months) will be a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to assess the feasibility of proceeding to a definitive cRCT.
The Place
This post will be based between the School of Psychology and the HRB Primary Care Clinical Trials Network Ireland based in the School of Medicine at NUI Galway. The person will become a staff member of the School of Psychology where we have a vibrant health psychology research community that offers multiple opportunities for career development through dedicated training, mentorship and networking activities.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will oversee, manage and lead on all work packages of the project. They will specifically focus on the day-to-day management of the study and delivery of the study in line with study objectives and timelines. They will oversee data entry, quality assurance, data management and analysis, financial management, meeting schedules, preparation of manuscripts and reports to the funding agency and study management. They should have strong experience in testing, modeling, refining and evaluating health behavioural change intervention and randomised controlled trials. Ideally they should be familiar with the Medical Research Council for developing and evaluating complex interventions and the Behaviour Change Wheel. They should have a strong track record of publishing in peer reviewed journals and at presenting at scientific conferences. Experience working with in a general practice research context would be desirable.
Duties/ Key Responsibilities:
•To work closely with Dr Molloy and Professor Murphy on all aspects on the study
•Assist with the supervision of the research assistant who will also work on this project
•To work collaboratively with other study Co-applicants and Collaborators •To prepare scientific and financial reports
•To organise and host study meetings and conferences as required
•Lead on the qualitative and quantitative data collection, collation, cleansing and analysis where appropriate
•To lead on the SWAT (Study Within A Trial) – to evaluate the feasibility of hand-held digital multimedia presentation of trial information to patients to promote recruitment and retention
•Build collaborative relationships with general practice study sites
•To maintain (and develop where appropriate) a study website and a social media account
•To assist in testing the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention package and make appropriate refinements
•To lead and assist in the preparation of all manuscripts associated with the study for publication in high quality, peer-reviewed journals and for presentation at scientific conferences
•To lead on the preparation of the study intervention reports where required, e.g., annual reports for ethics committees and funding agency
•To drive, develop, lead and coordinate the preparation and submission of grant proposals to funding agencies to build on this project
•Liaise with the Research Office, Research Accounts Office, Human Resources and Communications Office in NUI Galway
•Identify opportunities for research collaboration in the area of hypertension
•Support and deputise as required by the project leads at local, national and international meetings
•Write job descriptions, recruit, advertise and interview potential research assistants on the project
Qualifications/Skills required:
Essential Requirements:
1. Education to the level of PhD (Level 10-NQF) in Psychology, Social Science, Health Service Research or a related discipline. Those submitting their PhD thesis in 2021 may be considered if other criteria are met.
2. Experience in research project management in general practice or a similar setting
3. Experience with research budgets and in preparing progress reports for funders
4. Experience of leading and publishing qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research
5. Familiarity with key framework/ guideline documents such as the Medical Research Council for developing and evaluating complex interventions and the Behaviour Change Wheel
Desirable Requirements:
1. Experience in the area of health behaviour change intervention development and/ or evaluation
2. Research experience in the area of chronic disease, in particular hypertension
3. Experience of randomised controlled trials, in particular in the area of health behaviour change interventions
4. Experience in applying for research funding
5. Experience in testing, modeling, refining and evaluating health behavioural change interventions
Salary: 38,631.00 to 44,659.00 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).
Start date: Position is available from earliest possible start date June 2021
