Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Associate) - Nanoscience Initiative - Graduate Center

The Graduate Center, CUNY is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university. The mission of the Graduate Center’s Wellness Center has two important components. The first is to support and enhance the wellbeing and success of graduate students at the Graduate Center through excellent psychological counseling and referral services, outreach, and health education. The second component is to provide excellent clinical training to student mental health clinicians. Infused through all we do are our commitments to multicultural humility and equity.
The ASRC seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in Chris DelRe’s group. The research group will engineer new materials based on confined proteins or polymers for energy, medicine, or sustainability applications. The candidate will work in one or more of the following research areas: polymer physics, polymer chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and protein science. The candidate can direct their own project and assist on others’ projects. Candidates are expected to prepare publications and conference talks as well as mentor graduate students. The position will be for two years, up to August 2025, with a possibility of renewal for an additional two years if expectations are met and funding is available.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and in the office.
General Duties:
Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.
Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding
Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data
Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings
Collaborates with internal and external colleagues
Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.
Other Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in one of the following fields (or a related field): Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology. Doctoral degree should be obtained within five years of appointment to this position. Experience with common materials characterization techniques such as X-ray/neutron scattering, electron microscopy, NMR, and calorimetry is desired.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.
If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.
Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
