A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available at the Department of Musicology (IMV), University of Oslo.

The position will be affiliated with a new research initiative in the field of music and nature, currently under development.

More about the position

The Department of Musicology, University of Oslo, welcomes applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the field of ‘music and nature'. The topic for this post is broadly conceived and can be located in the intersection between music and one or more of the following themes: aesthetics and ethics, affect and embodiment, philosophy and historiography, politics and meaning. Candidates should seek to demonstrate the value of ‘thinking through music' and engage with critical discourses arising from musical practice and reception. The post is open in terms of musical tradition or genre, time period, geographical area, and method.

Applications must include a prosject discription closely connected to the field of research outlined above

The position is available for a period of 4 years. There is a 25 % component of the position which is devoted to teaching and administrative duties. These duties include obtaining basic teaching qualifications.

The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment/network of the department and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

The candidate will be mentored by Prof. Kyle Devine, Assoc. Prof. Peter Edwards, and Assoc. Prof. Nanette Nielsen.

Qualification requirements

· PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Musicology/Music Studies.Applicants with other relevant humanistic, cultural, or social research backgrounds may be considered. The PhD degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.

· The candidate's research project must be closely connected to field of research outlined above

· Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, fluency in a Scandinavian language can be considered an advantage.

· Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

· The research project's scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation

· The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame and contribute to the broadly defined research field mentioned above.

· Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines

Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
