Job Description

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Postdoctoral Apppointee in the Water Power Technologies Department. You will work both independently and with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, execute and analyze design studies and experiments. You will have a chance to work within both Sandia’s wind and water power technologies groups. Example tasks include: integrating new sensors into a wind turbine control system, design of wave energy converter controllers and power take-off (PTO) mechanisms, developing software tools to aid design tasks or data processing, supporting field experiments on research wind turbines, managing software configurations and upgrades, and documenting work through peer-review publications. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Use computational tools to design, analyze and test advanced wind turbine and wind plant control concepts to improve the capabilities and value of wind energy systems in new applications such as microgrids and hybrid power systems; + Conduct control simulations of energy systems incorporating using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and rapid prototyping experiments; + Support field testing at the Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) Facility using the department’s research turbines and the adjacent hybrid microgrid system; + Support testing at the Sandia Wave Energy Power Take-off (SWEPT) Lab of wave energy systems; + Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate partners, including the funding customer; + Participate in developing new business through idea generation, proposal writing, and networking opportunities; + Partner with other researchers and departments across Sandia that work on energy systems.

Required:

+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering or relevant STEM discipline from an accredited university; + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Desired:

+ Demonstrated experience in modeling of dynamical systems from first principle and experimental data; + Experience with industrial control hardware programming, real-time simulation, and industrial control software development; + Demonstrated experience in design of advanced controls, optimization, estimation, or detection algorithms for physical systems; + Experience with real-time implementation of system solutions in a variety of hardware platforms; + Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink; + Ability to travel up to 5 days per month.

Department Description:

Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
