Job Description
The Department of Global Oncology Research at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate. Dr. Gilberto de Lima Lopes Junior, M.D., MBA, FAMS announces the availability of one Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral position annually as of May 2020. Dr. Lopes serves as the Medical Director for International Programs and Associate Director for Global Oncology.
The purpose of the Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate position is for a physician to specialize in the emerging discipline of Global Oncology and lead cancer control efforts, improve clinical and health outcomes, conduct economic research and advocate for improvements upon their return to their home countries.
The Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate will be a one-year training program, contingent upon continued funding and performance for one physician from a low- and middle-income (LMIC) country in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program is set to begin May 2020. Upon their return home, the Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate will have expert leadership in the discipline and act as an example for their fellow students and teachers, government representatives, institutions of medical care, and partner collaborators.
Training will take place at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Health System under the direct supervision of Dr. Lopes and faculty of the Global Oncology and International Programs.
This opportunity is intended to support a physician researcher in low resource settings on scientific questions specific to those settings. This research has the potential to offer “reverse innovation” insights that could influence practice in a wide range of practice settings. Research may entail but is not limited to:
Health systems, outcomes and economics in research related to cancer control and care
Implementation research
Prevention and palliative care
Innovation in care delivery
Translational research
The final program will be designed to fulfill specific needs of the candidate, country, and health systems of the country of origin.
The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
Develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of cancer care
Develop research skills, which optimize a compassionate and humanistic approach to cancer control and delivery in a LMIC
Develop and initiate research projects (with the guidance of faculty)
Attend and participate in educational activities — journal clubs, hematology/oncology didactics, cancer round table conference, multidisciplinary conference, bone marrow conference, tumor boards, and conferences
Learn to critically analyze medical literature
Be aware of ethical issues that arise in end-of-life care
Attend program classes
Minimum Qualifications
Be a physician (MD, DO or international equivalent) working in any LMIC in Latin America or the Caribbean. Physician should have completed a residency program (or international equivalent) in either medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or hematology. Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions. CV must detail undergraduate, graduate, and professional education: include past internships, residencies, fellowships and other professional work history; summarize received honors, scholarships, grants and memberships; include research experience and publications.
