Postdoctoral Research Associate
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Department of Structural Biology
Summary
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking highly motivated candidates to join the Department of Structural Biology as a supported Postdoctoral Research Associate to drive new research directions in the Blanchard laboratory, including quantitative biophysical methods to explore clinically important biological systems at the single-molecule scale. Such pursuits will be carried out in collaboration with the Single-Molecule Imaging Center (SMC), which operates state-of-the-art fluorescence imaging technologies, including custom-built total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) and confocal time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) microscopes. Our highly interdisciplinary, collaborative and mission-driven environment requires team-oriented individuals with strong leadership skills and the vision and creativity to successfully pursue scientific advances.
Responsibilities:
· Assume leadership positions in one or more research directions to reveal the mechanistic underpinnings of clinically important biological systems, such as ribosome-catalyzed protein synthesis, membrane protein transport/signaling, and host-virus interactions, with a special emphasis on mammalian systems. These efforts will benefit from collaborative interactions with St. Jude’s protein technology and Cryo-EM/NMR and X-Ray Centers.
· Be agile in learning and utilizing the most appropriate assays to answer the biological question at hand.
· Utilize the cadre of single-molecule fluorescence instrumentation within the SMC – or help design and construct new instrumentation – to test hypotheses and rigorously quantify results, including model building and statistical analysis.
· Regularly present research findings in a clear, concise manner to both general and specialized audiences.
· Regularly prepare high-quality manuscripts of findings for publication.
· Assist in training and mentoring graduate students, post-docs and visiting scientists.
Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in life science or other physical science.
· Experience with quantitative biophysical and techniques, such as fluorescence imaging/spectroscopy, force spectroscopy, or single-channel electrophysiological recordings encouraged.
· Practical experience with protein and/or nucleic acid biochemistry techniques, such as protein expression/purification/labeling and nucleic acid modification/manipulation/purification preferred.
· Expert ability to distill and convey complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
