The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The research unit 'Forest Health and Biotic Interactions' investigates the influence of biotic factors on forest health and develops scientific principles for the protection of forests against possible harmful organisms. From April 2020, the Swiss Forest Protection Group is looking for 2 years for a

PostDoc Modeling of Priority Quarantine Forest Pests (80-100%)

You will work on a research project with practical application. You are responsible for the mathematical modelling of the introduction of particularly dangerous forest pests (insects and pathogens), their potential distribution, and their damage potential in Switzerland. The models will serve to develop a statistically robust method for surveillance of such harmful organisms. You will publish your results in international and national journals. The findings will be used to provide advice to the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment.

You have a university degree with a dissertation (PhD) in relevant natural sciences. You have experience in mathematical modelling, statistical data and GIS analysis. Basic knowledge of forest entomology and pathology is desirable. You are experienced in carrying out scientific projects and are familiar with writing scientific papers in English. You have a good command of English. Knowledge of German would be an advantage. Good communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to work in a team are fundamental.
