Job Description
The Immunomodulation and Translational Research Program in Department of Child Health, University of Missouri focuses on the development of novel biologics and their targeted delivery using various vehicles for immunomodulation to prevent and treat immune-based disorders with particular focus on transplantation, autoimmunity, and cancer. Duties for this Position include: i) develop, execute, and evaluate experiments assessing immunomodulatory efficacy of select biologics for the prevention and treatment of autoimmunity with particular focus on type 1 diabetes (NOD and islet transplantation); ii) islet isolation, characterization, and transplantation; iii) stem-cell-derived beta cell characterization and transplantation; iv) produce, analyze, and organize data for oral presentations at local, national, and international meetings as well as for grant submissions; v) keep detailed record of experimental results, write manuscripts, and publish them in peer-reviewed journals; vi) contribute to ongoing research by active participation in lab discussions, training graduate students and technical personnel for desired techniques as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Design and conduct studies that use novel biologics to modulate the immune response as a means of preventing type 1 diabetes (NOD) and treating with islet or stem cell-derived beta cells. The research will involve the production of recombinant proteins, generation of humanized mouse models for islet transplantation, and functional qualification of islets using various in vitro assays. Immune monitoring using flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, microarrays, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy. Further duties include, preparation of scientific publications, assistance with grant applications, and provide technical teaching/training support to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians.
Qualifications
Ph.D., M.D. or D.V.M. This position requires a minimum of 3 years of basic laboratory experience and expertise in immunology with focus on autoimmunity, preferably type 1 diabetes, working with rodents, mammalian tissue culture, DNA and RNA isolation, qRT-PCR, microarrays, RNA-seq, tetramer staining.
Effective oral and written and interpersonal communications skills as well as proficiency in word, excel, power point, and statistical software’s.
Preferred:
Expertise in NOD model, islet isolation and functional characterization, cell culture, multiparameter flow cytometry, basic molecular immunological techniques, and immunochemistry. Handling mice and performing various manipulations including injections.
