Position SummaryThe UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID) is recruiting an exceptional candidate for a postdoctoral research fellowship in malaria molecular epidemiology and diagnostic development. The fellow will join a dynamic group of investigators in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Ecology Lab (IDEEL; www. ideelresearch.org) who are conducting translational research projects on a range of pathogens across sites in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The fellow’s primary role will be to lead the development of new CRISPR and lateral-flow-based diagnostic tests for malaria. The fellow will perform both wet lab experiments and computational analyses during diagnostic design and optimization, in preparation for field testing of prototype diagnostic assays in rural Tanzania. The project will involve regular interaction with collaborators at UNC and in Tanzania and may involve international travel. The fellow will also have opportunities to participate in IDEEL’s other active projects. The fellow can expect to develop new laboratory and bioinformatic skills, to conduct meaningful translational research, and to have opportunities for authorship and career development. UNC is the oldest public university in the United States and consistently ranked among the nation’s top public universities. There are ample resources available to support the research and career development of postdoctoral fellows, including access to cutting-edge technologies and vast opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The UNC Division of Infectious Diseases boasts over 90 faculty members and houses a diverse group of researchers from basic biomedical researchers to translational scientists and clinical trial specialists. The Division of Infectious Diseases operates within the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID), which is home to an internationally renowned AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, IDEEL, and other leading research groups across a range of pathogens. IDEEL is currently housed in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, which received more NIH funding than any other public school of public health in 2018 and is considered one of the top schools of public health in the nation. UNC has demonstrated great success supporting the career development of its postdoctoral fellows. The fellow will have access to UNC’s North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS), funded by an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). Through NC TraCS, the fellow can take advantage of a wealth of resources to support her/his research and career development. Specifically, the fellow will have access to courses in the responsible conduct of research, grant writing seminars, training for mentoring students, biostatistical and study design support, and the availability of small grants for pilot studies.
Educational RequirementsPhD, DrPH, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree with experience in molecular biology, epidemiology, or related fields.
Qualifications and ExperienceThe ideal candidate will have experience with molecular biology techniques and will have familiarity with phylogenetic analysis. Proficiency in the laboratory and a track record of independent experimental design is required. Comfort with phylogenetic analysis and serological and/or lateral flow assay development is desired. Experience conducting research in developing countries is beneficial but not required. Candidates should have strong analytical and laboratory skills as demonstrated by a track record of relevant publications in well-respected journals. Outstanding communication skills are essential for this position.
