As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 7.30, salary £33,797

Full Time/FTC for 20 months

We seek to recruit a Research Fellow in Mass Spectrometry to undertake research as part ofthe EPSRC funded programme ‘NAMS: Native ambient mass spectrometry’. The post holder will undertake research in ambient mass spectrometry (including DESI, nanoDESI, LESA),and ion mobility spectrometry (including FAIMS, TWIMS and TIMS) of proteins and peptides.
Mass spectrometry facilities at the University of Birmingham include Thermo Fisher QExactive HF, Orbitrap Elite, Synapt G2S travelling wave ion mobility mass spectrometer,
TSQ Vantage, and Bruker Solarix FT-ICR, and high field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS).
The post holder should have significant hands-on experience of at least one of the following:
ambient surface mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry imaging, peptide and protein
analysis, native mass spectrometry, ion mobility mass spectrometry
Main Duties
To undertake work in the area of mass spectrometry within the specified research grant
(NAMS: Native ambient mass spectrometry EP/S002979/1)
Analyse, interpret and disseminate research findings and results
Contribute to public engagement activities
Contribute to generating funding and writing bids
The responsibilities include those outlined below.
To undertake research in ambient mass spectrometry, native mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry imaging, ion mobility spectrometry, and other related mass spectrometry techniques.
Analyse and interpret data
Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
Contribute to knowledge transfer in mass spectrometry and related areas that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
Person Specification
First degree in chemistry or related subject and a PhD in mass spectrometry or relevant experience in a similar role
High level analytical capability
Ability to communicate complex information clearly
Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
