The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, and today lead the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.
The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) came top in the league table of university research quality compiled from the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). Based on our publication record, citations and impact, we rank among the world’s leading cancer research centres. As a college of the University of London, the ICR provides postgraduate higher education of international distinction. We also have charitable status and rely on support from partner organisations, charities, donors and the public.
The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.
Vacancy Description
A postdoctoral position in synthetic and medicinal chemistry applied to the discovery and optimisation of new drugs to treat cancer patients is available in the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research (https://www.icr.ac.uk/our-research/our-research-centres/cancer-research-uk-cancer-therapeutics-unit). The successful candidate will apply their synthetic organic chemistry skills and familiarity with medicinal chemistry approaches to design and prepare molecules of interest as anticancer agents, working in collaboration with scientists in the Cancer Therapeutics Unit and our commercial partner. The successful candidates are expected to further develop their skills in medicinal chemistry, as well as a broader understanding of drug discovery.
The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research is a multidisciplinary ‘bench to bedside’ centre, dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Our exciting goal is to discover high quality drug candidates for validated biological targets and to progress these candidate compounds to clinical trial. Our chemists are located in new, well-equipped laboratories in Sutton, South London, where they work in close collaboration with world-class biologists and drug metabolism specialists to develop new small molecules that target important proteins involved in the development and progression of cancer.
Knowledge, experience and achievement in synthetic chemistry, and familiarity with medicinal chemistry approaches are essential. The successful applicant will have opportunities to develop additional skills in post. This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiastic, committed postdoctoral chemist to make an important contribution to improved therapies for cancer patients, while gaining experience and training in drug discovery skills in an institute with a track record of success.
Appointment will be for 2 years in the first instance. Starting salary will be between Points 1 – 5 on The Institute of Cancer Research PDTF Pay Scale (£ 32,200 – £ 40,100) dependent on qualifications and experience.
Further information can be found in the job description.
We consider all applications on merit and have a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of our staff.
