PostDoc (m/f/d) “MOSAiC Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) Observations of Sea Ice”
Background
The Sea Ice Geophysics Section in Bremerhaven studies the role of sea ice in the climate, eco, and human systems by means of in-situ, airborne, and satellite observations and modeling. We were leaders of sea ice research at the international Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate MOSAiC. MOSAiC acquired the most comprehensive, continuous, and most accurate year-round data of atmosphere-ice-ocean processes to date, over a complete annual cycle with its growing and melting seasons. Within the German Research Ministry (BMBF) funded IceSense sea ice remote sensing project we invite applications for a PostDoc on Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) Observations of Sea Ice.
Tasks
◦Processing and scientific analysis of a unique ALS data set for the observation of sea ice properties and processes like: the annual cycles of ice freeboard, thickness, roughness, and deformation and their pan-Arctic variability;
◦The redistribution of snow and feedback between melt pond formation and ice surface roughness; and others depending on preferences of the postdoctoral researcher.
◦Analysis of helicopter and fixed-wing ALS data
◦Make use of numerous auxiliary observations from the vast MOSAiC data sets, like ground-based terrestrial laser scanner surveys, transect snow and ice thickness data, airborne IR and photogrammetry surveys, and CryoSat-2 and IceSat-2 freeboard and roughness data as well as Sentinel 1 SAR imagery
Requirements
◦PhD in a quantitative discipline of the Natural Sciences or Engineering
◦Strong background in the processing of large observational data sets, ideally from airborne or satellite remote sensing
◦Experience with GPS and geodetic methods will be an advantage, as well as prior knowledge of sea ice research
◦Excellent programming skills (strong preference for python and IDL)
◦Good English language skills
◦Competitive publication record
