Position Details School of Social Sciences Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792. Grade 7 Part Time FTC up to 17 months Closing date: 20 November 2020
Background This post will support the delivery and dissemination of a study to evaluate the use of home monitoring systems, supported by artificial intelligence (AI), in social care. The study is part of a wider portfolio of evaluations undertaken by the BRACE Rapid Evaluation Centre – which is hosted by the Health Services Management Centre in collaboration with RAND Europe and the University of Cambridge. BRACE is funded for five years by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The study is investigating how home monitoring systems/AI are implemented and experienced by local authority managers and commissioners, social care staff, service users and their carers. It will include the development of a ‘theory of change' for how this innovation may achieve outcomes and impact for adult social care.
Job Summary We are seeking to recruit a research fellow to work 50% FTE for 17 months. The primary role of the appointed fellow will be to support the completion of qualitative fieldwork, specifically through carrying out semi-structured interviews with local authority and social care staff and service users/carers, to contribute to qualitative data analysis, report writing and the production of other outputs. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the research team, which is based across the University of Birmingham and RAND Europe, including regularly attending team meetings and other relevant events. Fieldwork may be remote (e.g. telephone or video) or face-to-face, depending on the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Main Duties • To work on the NIHR-funded evaluation of home monitoring systems, supported by artificial intelligence, in social care • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required • To contribute to literature searching and reviewing • To contribute to the design of research tools and data analysis protocols • To recruit participants to the study, including local authority and social care staff, and service users and carers • To arrange and carry out qualitative semi-structured interviews with participants recruited to the study • To analyse qualitative data using a relevant software package (e.g. NVivo) • To contribute to report and publication writing, and other forms of dissemination, including conference presentations • To work with the wider research team to share findings and draw out the key implications and lessons from the study • To support service user and carer engagement activities • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of the study objectives and deadlines • To participate in wider BRACE Rapid Evaluation Centre activities, including attending full team meetings, development sessions, and dissemination events • To undertake management and administration related to the research project and governance.
Person Specification • A first degree in health services research, social work or social care, social or public policy, sociology, or a related discipline, with demonstrable evidence of training in qualitative methods • A completed PhD in one of the above disciplines, with demonstrable evidence of significant qualitative work (candidates near to completion of their PhDs will also be considered) • Substantive expertise in health and/or social care policy, organisation and management research or related academic area • Experience of research demonstrating an ability to manage, analyse and report qualitative data • Demonstrable qualitative analytical skills • Demonstrable experience of use of appropriate data analysis packages (e.g. NVivo) • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to different audiences, including in writing and verbally • Understanding of and ability to contribute to research management and administration processes • Proven ability to work collaboratively as a member of multi-organisational research team.
