Research Associate

Job Purpose

The postholder will be based in the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit¿s ? Relationships and health programme, working with Professor Kirstin Mitchell, Relationships and Health programme. The postholder will be expected to make a contribution to the management and direction of the workstream and research programme, as well as leading on the formulation and submission of research papers and research proposals.

The successful candidate will have advanced skills in quantitative data management, up to date knowledge of cross sectional, longitudinal, and social network study designs and analyses. Experience working with large survey datasets would be beneficial. The post holder will be committed to interdisciplinary working and team science and the ability to work effectively across multiple projects keeping to deadlines and be expected to contribute to writing research publications and research proposals.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and strategic objectives of the SPHSU and the Relationships Programme.

2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.

3. Undertake advanced training in complex survey design, social network analysis, statistical methods, and developing and evaluating interventions as appropriate.

4. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the SPHSU, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

5. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with relationships and health, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.

6. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.

7. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.

8. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the SPHSU and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners), particularly in social network analysis.

9. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and unit activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

10. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

11. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.

12. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.

13. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

14. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.

15. Contribute to the enhancement of the University¿s international profile in line with the University¿s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Qualifications

A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

C1 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of research on social relationships, social connections, and social networks in relation to health, particularly in relation to mental health, isolation and loneliness.

C2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced quantitative methodology, including, but not limited to, multilevel modelling, multivariate regression, and social network analysis (e.g., exponential random graph models, simulation investigation for empirical network analysis)

C3 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher

Desirable:

D1 Skills related to the design of fieldwork studies (e.g. Sampling frames and sample site)

D2 Statistical methods related to study design (e.g. conducting power calculations for network data)

D3 Developing network study fieldwork materials and protocols

D4 Skills related to the treatment of missing data (e.g., imputations)

Experience

Essential:

E1 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner

E2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences

E3 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities

E4 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments, drafting of papers and successfully attracting research funding.

E5 Experience of managing research staff

E6 Experience of supervising PhD students

Desirable:

F1 Experience working with large-scale survey data (eg, data management and cleaning, statistical analyses and interpretation)

F2 Experience of delivering methods training

F3 Experience leading large, interdisciplinary teams

F4 Experience working across sectors and with policy stakeholders

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the University's Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,845 - £40,322 per annum.

This post has funding up to 31 March 2023.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.

All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University's relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court's policies.
