Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Conservation Science Research Group (Fixed Term)

University Of Cambridge

Description

Post-doctoral Research Associate - Conservation Science Research Group

(Fixed Term)

A Research Associate post is available in the Conservation Science Research Group to be supervised by Professor William Sutherland in the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge. The post-holder will be working on Biosecurity Research Initiative at St Catharine's Initiative (BioRISC).

The aim of BioRISC (Biosecurity Research Initiative at St Catharine's) is to examine new ways of collating and interpreting evidence in order to inform policy and practice. One important element of this work is the collation and interpretation of evidence, currently concentrating on invasive species management. The work so far has entailed the creation of a method, called dynamic meta-analysis (the preprint by Shackelford et al can be found at https: // bit.ly/2Jmn4JW). This method uses data from primary studies that have been collated (currently at https: // www. metadataset.com/), so that they can be interpreted by individual users. For example, this may include a user carrying out a meta-analysis that is relevant to the context of their needs. This system also allows the automated updating of analysis as more literature is added. The proposed work is to find means of delivering evidence in a way that is useful for different users' contexts, to improve the usability of metadataset.com, and to develop methods to allow the synthesis of studies that differ in study design. We are looking for someone with knowledge of environmental issues who has a strong, proven record of using R for complex statistical analysis and for the production of packages.

BioRISC is funded by the David and Claudia Harding Foundation. This post will be based in the Department of Zoology.

Essential criteria:

Educated to PhD level, in a relevant subject, such as ecology

Good understanding of ecology

Good understanding of meta-analysis

Proven ability to use R for analysis and the production of packages

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships

Proven publishing record in peer-reviewed journals

Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

Ability to work in a team

Attention to detail

Ability to simplify complex scientific information to be understood by non-experts

Desirable:

Ability to design websites and conduct user-testing

Experience making academic research relevant to policy or practitioners

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available up until 30 June 2022.
