Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792.

Background

Birmingham Particle Physics group has a vacancy for a Research Fellow working on the data analysis and detector operation within the NA62 experiment at CERN. successful applicant will play a leading role in the group's analysis of NA62 data towards precision measurements of the K+®p+nn decay and other rare kaon decays. y will also contribute to the group's work on NA62 data collection at CERN, the maintenance of the NA62 KTAG detector, and beam tests at CERN.

Role purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge through the achievement of the particle physics research group's strategy by undertaking specified activities within the established NA62 research project, in the area of rare kaon decay physics.

Main Responsibilities

To analyse and interpret data from the NA62 experiment at CERN, in the area of rare kaon decay physics To contribute to the operation and development of the NA62 KTAG detector To present research findings in publications, research seminars and conference talks To contribute to the development of new techniques and methods To develop further research objectives and proposals (with assistance of a mentor if required) To supervise and provide guidance to PhD students on research related work To contribute to writing bids for research funding

Scope of the Role

Physics analysis of NA62 data, presentation and publication of the results Contributing to the maintenance, operation and development of the NA62 KTAG detector Contributing to generation of funding Skills and Experience

Essential criteria

PhD in particle physics (or thesis submitted, or about to be submitted) Experience in particle physics data analysis; programming experience in C++ Good presentation/communication/interpersonal skills Ability to work to deadlines/schedule within a project High level analytical capability Willingness to travel for short periods within the UK and abroad Broad computing experience, e.g. Linux, Python, git

Desirable criteria

Experience with the NA62 experiment Experience with publication of physics results Experience with Cherenkov particle identification detectors Planning and Organising Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
