Post-Doctoral Fellow
University of Houston College of Pharmacy
Job Description
Post Doctoral Fellow - (STA006082)
Organization
: H0112 Physics
Description
The Das Laboratory at University of Houston has two immediate openings with a flexible start date. One for computational/mathematical research and another for experimental research/instrumentation/hardware. Our investigations are rooted on developing innovative imaging techniques for applications like early stage cancer detection, materials science, defense and security and geophysics. We combine optical physics, instrumentation, image science algorithms, information theoretic and data science approaches in our research.
Possesses, understands, and applies a comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization. Develops understanding and skills to allow for completion of assignments that cross fields of specialization. Develops leadership and management skills.
Receives/Reviews progress and evaluates results of experiments or projects under control or supervisory responsibility.
Recommends changes in research, testing or experimental procedures.
May be responsible for a single highly technical and complex piece of research equipment.
May review and evaluate the effectiveness of personnel.
May plan for and assign personnel to projects under control.
Operates with latitude for unreviewed action.
May receive general supervision conferring with higher levels only in unusual situations.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
EEO/AA
Qualifications
Doctoral and No experience
Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. No experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Physics or Engineering preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
Candidates with past experience in instrumentation or computational/mathematical methods in some of the following areas will be considered: computational imaging, x-ray science, single photon counting detectors, tomographic image reconstruction, benchtop optical experiments, computational imaging, microscopy, X-ray CT, scatter imaging, phase contrast imaging, tomographic imaging, instrumentation/hardware development with x-ray, optical or ultrasound.
For multimodality aspects of the project, those with experience in ultrasound, PET/SPECT, NIR Optical imaging would also be considered.
Note to Candidates Both positions involve close interaction with graduate and undergraduate students and participating in multiple ongoing projects in the lab. Several industrial and clinical collaboration opportunities exist. Candidates who would like to contribute to both experimental and computational research are also welcome to apply. In the next stage of our project, there will also be significantly higher interaction with clinical researchers and with medical schools.
Experimental Research/Instrumentation : Excellent hands on technical skills in optical system design/development and data analysis is sought. Experience in using photon counting detectors such as Medipix and Timepix, x-ray CT system development, other imaging system development (ultrasound/optical/PET) etc. will be a plus. Excellent programming and quick prototyping skills and advanced knowledge of Matlab, python, C, C++, etc. desirable. Ability to interact with major equipment manufacturing industries or national/international labs and collaborations.
Computational/Mathematical Methods : Candidate with research experience in developing mathematical and computational models involving forward and inverse problems for imaging modalities (x-ray, ultrasound, optical, or other) are invited to apply. Most ideas will be tested in our laboratory or with a collaborator. Experience working with computational imaging, computational models for x-ray tomography, detector physics and design, phase contrast imaging, statistical reconstruction methods, computational methods for ultrasound/Optical/PET imaging would be highly desirable. Physics and Engineering skills to quickly prototype novel imaging ideas are a must. Excellent computational skills (Matlab, python, C, C++), quick prototyping of novel ideas, working with high performance computing, Monte Carlo codes etc. are also desirable.
Salary: commensurate with experience
