Research Associate
Job Purpose
As a successful candidate you will make a leading contribution to a BBSRC funded research project investigating Lachnospiraceae in the gut microbiome and their role in disease.
Postholder will be working in the Bacteriology research area within the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation under the supervision of Dr Daniel Wall Principal Investigator, Dr. Richard Burchmore and Prof. Richard Goodwin (AstraZeneca).
You will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this exciting project as opportunities allow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/Institute/College research strategy.
2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/ Institute / Research Group, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project and subject area, and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.
5. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/Institute/College/University and wider community eg Academic and Industrial Partners.
8. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and Institute research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the Institute/College.
9. Take a leading role in analytical technique development, protocol transfer and integrated data analysis to enhance the research and wider scientific community.
10. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
11. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and Institute, including budgets/expenditure.
12. Make a leading contribution to teaching activities eg demonstrating etc and associated admin as assigned by the Director of Institute and in consultation with Principal Investigator.
13. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
14. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
15. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Research Institute.
16. Contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Qualifications
Essential
A1. Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 PhD in Molecular/Cellular Biology or Microbiology or a cognate discipline or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related roles
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
C1. Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in a research related field (specifically molecular or cellular biology, or bacteriology)
C2. Knowledge of host cell biology, the gut microbiome/microbiology and in vivo models of disease.
C3. Excellent skills in a range of molecular/cellular biology, in vivo infection and microbiology techniques.
C4. Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.
Desirable
D1. Skills in culture and maintenance of anaerobic bacteria
D2. Bioinformatic skills.
D3. Knowledge of imaging mass spectrometry or imaging mass cytometry
D4. Knowledge of infectious agents.
Experience
Essential
E1. Project or subject specific experience, particularly experience of working with mouse models.
E2. Experience of tissue culture techniques such as cell isolation, maintenance, tissue/cell staining and microscopy.
E3. Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E4. A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences
E5. Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
E6. Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design and analysis of experiments and drafting of papers
E7. Experience in undertaking independent research
Desirable
F1. Experience in bacteriological techniques; such as bacterial growth, maintenance, and their use for infection/colonisation work.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the University's Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,845 - £40,322 per annum.
This post has funding up to 31 March 2024.
New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University's relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court's policies.
