For the purposes of sponsorship, this is a postdoctoral role under SOC code 2119.

The Post

The University of Stirling is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work on a study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council entitled “ Connectivity and Digital Design for Health and Well-being Across Generations, Places and Spaces ”.

The successful candidate will be based in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport under the direct supervision of Prof. Anna Whittaker with support from Dr Pete Coffee, Dr Gemma Ryde and Dr Karen Watchman, as well as the overall project PI (Prof Catherine Hennessy) and wider management team at Stirling (Prof. Richard Haynes).

The academic Sport division at Stirling delivers research and education across a broad sport, health, and exercise agenda. The division's research structure consists of three specialised research groups united under the umbrella Sp ort, H ealth and E xercise R esearch and E ducation (SpHERE); this post will sit within the S tirling P hysical A ctivity R esearch Knowledge and Learning E xchange (SPARKLE) research group led by Prof Whittaker.

Description of Duties

The Post Doctoral Research Fellow will work with the Principal Investigator, the project leads in Intergenerational Physical Activity (IGPA) and Sport- based Reminiscence (SBIR) at Stirling, Co-Investigators at the University of Plymouth and a range of project partners in Scotland and Cornwall.

You will be responsible for recruiting older people and school age participants for inter-generational Reference Groups and co-production groups and collecting mainly qualitative data across several WP stages during the project. You will assist in obtaining ethical approval, and in the preparation of research materials including digital participant instructions, consent forms and research instruments. Data collection will include mixed methods, including interviews, group interactions, non-participatory observation and evaluation, and use of standardised questionnaires, all of which will involve careful and systematic recording.

You will implement analysis of these qualitative data, which may involve managing transcripts using NVivo, following protocols agreed by the team. You will contribute to the synthesis of multi-method datasets. You will assist in preparing publications and other communications such as website information and social media posts on these aspects of the work.

Throughout, your work will involve a co-production approach which values multiple and diverse contributions. As a full member of the team, you will participate in team activities including meetings and workshops, which will include external partners and members of local communities. You will have opportunities to develop your mixed-methods skills through involvement in other areas of project work, such as assisting with quantitative analysis, the development of the legacy tools and the delivery of impact activities.

Essential Criteria

Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline e.g., social sciences, psychology, life sciences, sports science

Experience of successfully conducting high quality research both independently and collaboratively within strict timescales

Skills in qualitative data collection and analysis

Excellent collaboration skills with a diverse range of research partners and stakeholders

Understanding and awareness of research governance and ethical issues in research, and of obtaining ethical approval

Excellent communication skills including experience of writing/contributing to publications, presentation and social media skills

Experience of writing for academic publication

Active interest in and understanding of at least one of the following: physical activity and sport; digital communications; or social gerontology

Understanding of and commitment to co-productive working

Desirable Criteria

Experience of working with older people and/or young people

Experience of co-production research

Experience of consensus methodologies

Experience in using NVivo or similar programmes to manage and analyse data

A record of high quality publications and conference presentations

Experience of mixed methods research
