爱尔兰国立高威大学医疗器械研究中心工和设计博士后职位

National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway)

NUIG RES-070-21 Postdoctoral Researcher – in Industrial Processing & Design of a Scaffold for the Repair of Rotator Cuff Tears Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

The position is available for a 24-month period initially, with a possibility for extension, subject to successful project outcomes and funding acquisition. This position represents an unparalleled opportunity to participate at the birth of new a start-up formation within the Commercialization Fund Programme from Enterprise Ireland initiative by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and European Regional Developmental Fund from European Commission. The position is available from June 2021.

Organisation: The Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) is a national, SFI funded, 49.6m research centre that brings together researchers from NUI Galway, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The prime objective for CÚRAM is to radically improve health outcomes for patients by developing innovative implantable ‘smart’ medical devices to treat major unmet medical needs. Implants will be designed and manufactured to respond to the body’s environment and to deliver therapeutic agents, such as drugs, exactly where needed. Cutting-edge science will develop devices using the very latest research from electrically active materials, biomaterials, stem cells and drug delivery and the support of strong clinical collaborations, industry partners and hospital groups to enable rapid translation to the clinic. The centre includes almost 40 industry partners and supports product development and the creation of new spin-out companies.

Project: This project will be conducted in conjunction with Dr. Biggs Lab and CURAM. The goal is to bring the tendon-regeneration technology developed at Dr. Biggs Lab to the market. The main activities of this project are to design a delivery system for scaffold implantation, scale up the manufacturing process of the product and perform large animal experimentation for FDA approval. This is a first-gen product with further applications in soft tissue repair and biosensors. As the project progresses, we will engage as required with domain experts and other independent entrepreneurs to develop a successful commercialization strategy leading to a start-up.

Job Description:

The Technical Leader (TL) role will be responsible for the optimization of the formulation, fabrication, and characterization of the tendon-regeneration scaffolds. In conjunction with partners the successful candidate will be in charge of coordinating the preclinical studies and scaling up and establish the manufacturing process in GMP conditions.

What we are searching for:

•Experience with polymer synthesis and electrospinning;

•Finite Element modelling experience is a plus

•Experience with musculoskeletal pre-clinical models

•Interact with physician KOLs

•Willingness to engage in spinning-out the technologies developed in this project

Duties:

•Perform extensive physicomechanical characterization;

•Analyse data in an accurate and precise manner;

•Scale the design to human attributes ensuring the design parameters of the materials

and product configuration are appropriate also for a large animal model preclinical study.

Liaise with veterinary surgeons on the design of a large pre-clinical study

•Develop a number of design concepts building on the data generated in the small animal model already completed.

•Obtain feedback from Physician KOLs

•Actively participate in international conferences and meetings

•Closely work with industry partners and postdoctoral scientists within CÚRAM and associated institutes within and outside NUI Galway.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

•Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant science or engineering subject and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in research/industry experience, and a proven track record in a research and development environment. Previous experience with PTFE formulation and electrospinning; finite elements modelling and pre-clinical studies is essential.

•Candidates must demonstrate a systematic understanding of a field of tissue engineering

•Candidates must demonstrate an ability to manage a research project including the co-supervision of students.

•Candidates must possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in clinical translation of medical devices.

Desirable Requirements:

•The successful candidate should also have expertise in as many of the following areas as possible: animal handling; in vitro assays; biocompatibility assays; protein analysis; histology; immunohistochemistry; biomaterials fabrication and functionalization.

•Candidates should be highly motivated and passionate about developing new medical products.

Salary: 39,186 to 42,201 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).
