Bioinformatician / Computational Biologist

Job Purpose
The post holder will join the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, MRC University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) and will make a leading contribution to SARS-CoV-2 sequencing projects funded by the Scottish Government and COG-UK. You will be embedded (working remotely or on site) with Professor Emma Thomson's team and will link with the bioinformatics group led by Professor David Robertson.
Specifically, the postholder will support the key project goals:
1. To support the analysis of data generated for SARS-CoV-2 sequencing across Scotland in order to generate regular reports for the Scottish and UK governments on new variants and vaccine efficacy using mapping and de novo assembly methods.
2. Link with the virology and clinical teams to ensure that variants of concern are highlighted to policymakers and to the virology team for onward experiments.
3. Link with members of the Scottish deployed vaccine study (DOVE) team to assist with the analysis of virus sequences from people who have bene vaccinated but have become infected.
4. Link with the Public Health Scotland team to develop improved clinical and sequence data linkage within PHS and within the national Safe Haven.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy. This will involve taking a leading role working with the project partners at the CVR and to support their analytical objectives.
2. To carry out bioinformatic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 genomes to generate weekly reports on new and emerging variants in Scotland.
3. To take responsibility for providing bioinformatics and computational support for the project partners.
4. To work with other researchers at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR), University of Glasgow and Public Health Scotland (PHS) to support the project aims and aligned projects. 5. To assist and contribute to the project's research objectives, in collaboration with other data scientists, bioinformaticians and CVR researchers.
6. To develop and enhance your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow, including writing and contributing to publications of international quality in high quality journals aligned with the project goals.
7. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
8. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/ group/ meetings/ seminars/ workshops across the research Group/School/College/University and wider community.
9. Contribute to the supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
10. Keep up-to-date with relevant SARS-CoV-2, data science and virology literature, practical knowledge base, and recent advances in the field/discipline.
11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University¿s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing the World

This position is available on a full-time basis until 31 March 2022. Applications to work on a part time basis, eg 50% will also be considered.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the University's Research and Teaching Grade, level 6/7, £29,176 - £32,817/£35,845 - £40,322 per annum.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
