The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is one of Sweden's oldest IT departments and one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with about 190 employees and 5,000 students. DSV offers a stimulating research environment and a strong research group in the area of Human-Computer Interaction with well-established national and international connections to leading industrial and academic institutions.
Project description The postodictoral researcher will be working with Professor Barry Brown at Stockholm University, in collaboration with the RISE cybersecurity laboratory.
The project's main purpose is to bring marginalised perspectives into cybersecurity, starting with looking at deviant use of smart home devices. This project will use methodologies such as participatory design (PD), as well as feminist theories to reflect on the agency and control of different groups of users as individuals, in families and in society in order to redesign and evaluate security systems with respect to improve our unequal, gendered world. To pursue this agenda, it adopts a Research through Design (RtD) approach drawing on methods such as technology trials, design workshops, participatory design, user observation in the wild (in their household) and in the lab (RISE Cyber Range), As part of ongoing collaborations, the project will connect the Swedish Node for Cybersecurity, Gender and IoT research group (GIoT) at UCL as well as the The Security, Privacy, Identity and Trust Engagement NetworkPlus at Manchester University
Main responsibilities The fellow will need to run fieldwork research, conducting joint analysis with collaborators and working this into completed research papers. It is expected that the researcher will present their work in international forums and journals, as well as collaborating with colleagues across the two sites.
Qualification requirements Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
The candidates must have successfully passed Stage 1 and Stage 2 of Digital Futures postdoc fellowships evaluation spring 2021.
The project requires expertise in interview and qualitative methods, HCI development methods, Research through Design (RtD), field methods and design methods broadly. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The following criteria will be used for assessing candidates:
Research expertise: A track record demonstrating excellence in qualitative methods for researching system use, alongside research related to human centred cybersecurity.
Independence: Ability to formulate own original research ideas and conduct research independently in the field of HCI. Paper publications in this area are a must.
Collaborative abilities: Ability to work as a part of team, and evidence of collaborations around active research projects.
Communication abilities: Ability to fluently communicate research ideas and results. This should include writing academic publications that are published at top conference venues.
Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality. Awareness of gender issues in research, including issues around feminist research methods, and feminist technoscience.
Teaching abilities are meritorious for the position. Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Terms of employment The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2021-09-01 or as per agreement.
