Autistic traits and mental health in females with the Fragile X premutation

The Project and the Role

Applications are invited from graduates with a good first degree and subsequent PhD in Psychology or another related discipline for a two-year appointment. The appointee will co-ordinate and conduct research at the University of Surrey as part of a research project funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences.

You will work on a project evaluating the behavioural, cognitive and genetic correlates of autistic traits and mental health in females with the Fragile X premutation (FX-p). The specific aims of the project are to:

1) Report the prevalence and profile of autistic traits and mental health challenges in females with the FX-p.

2) Assess social-cognitive correlates that underlie the development of these challenges.

3) Analyse the relationship between genetics (CCG repeat size), behavioural and social-cognitive characteristics.

You will use a range of research methods including self-report questionnaires and interviews, behavioural observation and eye-tracking methods. You will recruit participants via our Fragile X syndrome society collaborators and via existing research databases. You will communicate with participants and stakeholders to ensure effective dissemination of the work, as well as traditional scientific communication via academic papers (at least one first author paper is envisaged) and conferences.

You will work within the Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Lab (www. ndevresearchlab.com) at the University of Surrey. You will collaborate with a strong network of expert researchers and clinicians in the field of behavioural phenotypes and neurodevelopmental disorders and as part of the Cerebra Network for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (www. cerebranetwork.co.uk).

You will have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Psychology or a related subject (or will be close to finishing your PhD), have extensive practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques of research within clinical populations. You will have experience in designing and conducting eye-tracking methods, behavioural studies and standard data coding as well as having experience of statistical analysis using statistical packages such as R or SPSS.
