The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a vibrant and rapidly growing department within MSE.

We are working on some of the most meaningful problems at the interface of engineering with life and medical sciences. The crux of this work being the application of interdisciplinary expertise and thought in order to make new discoveries and innovative solutions towards improved healthcare and social wellbeing.

About the role:

Working within a team dedicated to the BioMedTech Horizons (BMTH) Project 3.239, you will oversee a study delivering personalised epilepsy treatment via mobile and wearable technology. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver a real-time seizure forecasting system to empower people living with epilepsy.

In this role you will work towards determining which physiological markers obtained through wearable technologies provide the best proxy for seizure risk.

You will also work closely with a research team to integrate wearable technologies into an app that can provide a real-time seizure forecast. The Research will aim to investigate the benefits of providing seizure forecasts in terms of improved patient quality of life and reduced healthcare costs.

This project will be undertaken with an industry partner, Seer Medical. Seer Medical is an Australian MedTech company committed to lifting the standard of epilepsy-related care and improving patient outcomes. You will be charged with the hands-on work addressing the goals of the project, especially with participant management and working closely with the software development team at Seer to implement and test seizure forecasts. This includes recruiting people with epilepsy, day-to-day clinical study management, implementing patient-specific forecasts of seizure risk on the Seer Cloud, validating forecast performance, and conducting participant surveys. The position will report to Dr Philippa (Pip) Karoly and will be required to co-supervise PhD, MPhil and Master students as required.

About You:

Naturally you will be capable of demonstrating your prior record of achievement in the following:

Postgraduate research degree at PhD level in Biomedical Engineering, Neurology/Epileptology, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or relevant field

Strong neuroscientific, clinical epileptology, and/or computational skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to interact with patients in a clinical environment, as well as internal and external stakeholders (academic, administrative and support staff) in a courteous and effective manner

Ability to perform independent research and to work effectively as a member of a research team

Project and time management skills, including ability to manage competing priorities

Record of high-quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences commensurate with opportunity

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at conferences, internal forums, and manuscript submissions.

Computer literacy and programming experience, particularly in Python or MATLAB.

Additionally, it would be desirable (but not necessary) if you if you also had experience in relation to any of the following:

Clinical experience working with people with epilepsy and/or previous experience in human clinical trials.

Machine learning or statistical inference.

Reading or analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) signals.

Supervision of students or other researchers
