At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) we are committed to teaching and high-quality research in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology and intensive care. We have around 400 employees, more than 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. We now are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral student with a strong background in in xenograft models of cancer to study cancer metabolism.

Division

The Cellular Metabolism group is led by Associate Professor Erik Norberg at the Dept. of Physiology and Pharmacoloy. The group is located in an inspiring and interactive research environment in the top modern Biomedicum at Campus Solna and has on-going collaborative projects with national and international colleagues. The group has a central focus on profiling and understanding the difference in metabolism in a normal healthy cell compared to tumors. A defining hallmark of cancer is altered metabolism. Since the metabolism is rewired in tumors, compared to normal tissues, it holds great promise for discovery of novel drug targets and to improve cancer therapy. We will now move towards therapeutic aspects of metabolism for the development of new interventions.

Duties

The main duty will be to establish patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models of lung cancer as well as to study cancer metabolism in xenograft models of lung cancer. These two experimental systems will be used to directly analyze metabolism in live tumors and to target metabolic nodes using RNAi and/or pharmacological inhibitors. It will also involve dietary restrictions in combination with standard chemotherapeutics as well as targeted therapies. The candidate will work closely with preclinical scientists and clinicians.

The obtained material will be analyzed using many state-of-art methods including, but not limited to, metabolomics, quantitative proteomics, single- cell sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing beyond standard methods.

Entry requirements

The candidate should be self-motivated and be eager to study cancer metabolism. Candidates should have a strong background in cancer biology and demonstrate a promising publication record. As the candidate will be responsible to carry out the in vivo experimentation on tumors, previous hands-on experience in in vivo tumor work is desired (as documented by FELASA B or equivalent). Skills in additional mouse cancer models including orthotopic and PDX models are a merit.

The candidate must have excellent organizational skills, be able to plan and perform the expected work. The candidate should be accurate and flexible and can work under deadlines as well as being able to multitask. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are a requirement as the ability to work in a team with preclinical scientists and with clinicians.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
