爱尔兰国立高威大学2021年招聘博士后职位(电气和电子工程方向)

National University of Ireland

Postdoctoral Researcher – Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering, NUI Galway (NUIG RES 140-21)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Translational Medical Device lab within the School of Engineering at the National University of Ireland Galway.

The position is funded by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation through Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) and is available from August 2021 to July 2022.

The Project:

The research project will focus on the pre-clinical evaluation of a novel solution to treat cardiac arrhythmia. Currently, Atrial Fibrillation ablations are performed with the objective of blocking the pathway of the ‘stray’ electrical signal/impulse into the left atrium. It is widely understood that most of these erratic signals, that cause the arrhythmia, enter the heart where the pulmonary veins open into the atrium. The ablation is therefore performed at these locations and is known as pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). The ablation is essentially an intentional scarring treatment that renders the tissue dead and non-conductive in order to block the signal. The current ablation methods are all essentially thermal-based using either radiofrequency or cryoenergy to heat or freeze the tissue respectively, leading to tissue necrosis and blocking of conduction. However, gaps often remain or develop over time resulting in reconnection and ultimately failure of the treatment.

The Translational Medical Device Lab, at NUI Galway, and AtriAN Medical Ltd are working on a collaborative project, SmartCardio, which aims to develop a novel medical device to target the origin of Atrial Fibrillation to achieve effective treatment without creating scar tissue. The team have developed the device prototype that uses pulsed electric fields (PEF) to non-thermally ablate the target. This postdoctoral role will focus on pre-clinical device testing and evaluation work-packages of the project. The research will be conducted at the Translational Medical Device Lab, NUI Galway, in collaboration with AtriAN Medical Ltd.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work alongside the current project team to progress the novel technology for the treatment of arrhythmia to pre-clinical evaluation. Technical work includes the design of experiments and suitable testbeds for pre-clinical testing to evaluate efficacy and safety of device prototype, bench testing and execution of pre-clinical experiments/studies.

Duties: The successful candidate shall be expected to carry out the following duties as part of his/her role:

Research

Development of bench-top/ex-vivo tissue models for the validation of device prototype.

Select an appropriate pre-clinical model for pre-clinical testing of the device prototype.

Plan pre-clinical research study and coordinate execution of the study with pre-clinical testing laboratory (subcontractor).

Work with other team members to plan project activities and set key milestones

Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support as appropriate.

Plan, co-ordinate and implement research project (this may include managing a small research team/co-ordinating other researcher activity).

Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular, developments in the specific research area.

Collaborate with colleagues on areas of shared research interest.

Interface with clinical, commercial and technical experts.

Define research objectives and proposals for own (or joint) research in line with research strategy whilst contributing to the research programme of the Translational Medical Device Lab at NUI Galway. This will be under general guidance of a member of the Principal Investigator/ Project Leader.

Research Administration/Management

To complete the administrative work to support the programme of research.

To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.

To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
