Description
Post-Doctoral Research AssociateReference: AE0215R
Campus: Hull Faculty/Area: Institutes Subject Group/Team: Energy and Environment Institute Salary: £34,804 to £40,322 per annum Fixed Term - 12 Months Post Type: Full TimeClosing Date: Tuesday 07 September 2021 Interview Date: To be confirmed
Applicants are required to submit a current CV and covering letter outlining how their qualifications and experience meet the Person Specification in the Job Description below.
The ‘Risky Cities: Living with Water in an Uncertain Future Climate' project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the UK Climate Resilience Programme. It develops research-informed learning histories for one flood-prone UK city, Kingston-Upon-Hull, and utilises them in community-based arts and heritage interventions and large-scale productions developed in collaboration with project partners including Absolutely Cultured and the National Youth Theatre. In doing so, the project aims to raise climate awareness and build flood resilience in vulnerable estuarine and coastal communities.
The PDRA will support two key work packages on the Risky Cities project: firstly exploring how Hull communities have experienced, responded to and learned to live with water in the period after c. 1900; and working with the PI and CIs in undertaking monitoring and evaluation of the project's engagement and impact activities and delivering the project's policy outputs. They may also support staff leading on the other work packages.
The post will be based in the Energy and Environment Institute (EEI) at the University of Hull - a research intensive centre that brings together leading interdisciplinary academics, to tackle global issues surrounding climate change and its consequences on livelihoods - and will collaborate with colleagues from across the University and project partners. In addition, there will be opportunities to proactively engage with other related research projects including the new University of Hull Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships Centre for Water Cultures, which is also based in the EEI, and with colleagues in the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education.
It is anticipated that the person appointed to this post will have experience of using qualitative research methods (such as oral histories, semi structured interviews, or focus groups) to collect project data and deliver publications, and of designing and delivering public engagement activities and/or with community groups. Experience liaising with external project partners, evaluating the effectiveness of engagement and impact activities, and engaging with policy makers and other external stakeholders is essential. Familiarity with twentieth-century research sources is also essential.
The project will offer excellent career development opportunities including managing significant elements of a work package, speaking at international academic conferences and co-authoring publications. They will also help coordinate the project workshop and advisory board meetings, as well as contribute to the project's website and social media profile.
The PDRA will be managed by the Risky Cities PI Prof. Briony McDonagh, and will collaborate closely with the PI, CI and PDRAs.
To discuss this role informally, please contact Briony A McDonagh at B.McDonagh@hull.ac.uk
