You will join our collaborative team in the field of silicon photonics to take up a role within the prestigious EPSRC funded project MISSION (Mid-Infrared Silicon Photonic Sensors for Healthcare and Environmental Monitoring), a major collaborative programme between the Universities of Southampton, York and Sheffield, the University Hospital Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre.

You will be based in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (https:// www. orc.soton.ac.uk), and will carry out internationally recognised research into the implementation of photonic devices for sensing in healthcare. Our enthusiastic team of researchers work in the area of silicon photonics, utilising the state-of-the-art Zepler Institute Cleanroom Facilities (https:// www. zeplerinstitute.com/facilities) at the University of Southampton, UK. The vision of MISSION is to play a leading role in driving innovation in photonic sensing by addressing challenges in detection of therapeutic drugs, cancer and greenhouse gases which will require you to work closely with project partners and in particular with colleagues from the University Hospital Southampton on spectroscopic measurements of biomedical samples.

It is essential you have a PhD (or equivalent professional qualification and experience) in photonic sensing or related topic. You should have a strong background in silicon photonics within a cleanroom environment and a background in the design and characterisation of photonic devices, with an aptitude for critical evaluation and interpretation of experimental data. Experience in photonic device modelling and mid-IR measurement of biological samples is desirable. It is also expected that you can evidence the following:

· The ability to work independently and a good team work attitude

· Ability to assist with the supervision of postgraduate students

· Excellent communication and organisational skills and proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations

This post is full-time fixed term up to 2 years duration due to funding restrictions.
