The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include: Processing of the research project AbifFa ""Surface functionalisation 2.0. algae biofilm facades for cleaner air and an improved urban climate"" in the Zukunft Bau programme. Your tasks include in particular:

- Design and planning of experiments - Design, implementation, and evaluation of biofilm experiments in the laboratory and in the field - Optimisation of the environmental simulation system (HI-Tension) - Determination of growth and biodeterioration rates for material-colonising microorganisms (phototrophic and heterotrophic) - Cooperation with material scientists, environmental scientists and biologists from various disciplines - Data evaluation and interpretation of own results in an international research context - Writing scientific publications and reports and presenting the results at scientific conferences

Your qualifications: - Successfully completed academic university degree (Master’s degree or diploma) in the field of materials science with a focus on heritage conservation or a comparable field of study - PhD in biology and applied biotechnology with a focus on heritage conservation and lichenology or microbiology Several years of experience in working with environmentally exposed inorganic surfaces (stones, monuments, building facades) - Extensive experience with laboratory and field experiments as well as in the corresponding investigation and analysis methods - Proven experience in the assessment and monitoring of exposed inorganic surfaces, with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of the measures - Very good command of written and spoken English - Good knowledge of German, both written and spoken, is an advantage - Willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation and further training - Publications in peer-reviewed, scientific journals as first author and experience in oral presentations at international, scientific congresses - Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structures way of working, initiative / commitment, ability to work in a team, conceptual and innovative thinking skills
