Job Description:

Summary: The research fellow will aid in the design, organization, and implementation of specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols and procedures within the scope of the metabolic surgery laboratory (basic, clinical, and translational research). In some cases, the fellow may be involved with designing new protocols. Additionally, the fellow will be involved with summarizing findings and working to publish in clinical and research journals; assume general responsibility for scientific operations of the laboratory; provide supervision and guidance to junior technicians, students, and researchers.

Job Responsibilities: • Design and implement research protocols; design safety procedures; adapt new procedures, methods or instrumentation relative to research procedures. • Oversee media preparation, animal maintenance and equipment maintenance, quality control analysis of reagents. • Collect, prepare and analyze research data; keep a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data; maintain computer database of research data; tabulate and display data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation; use graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data. • Supervise other personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participate in training of residents, students and volunteer workers as needed. • Search pertinent scientific literature as needed. • Assist with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment and with general maintenance of laboratory. Skills, Education, and Experience Required: • MD, PhD or MD/PhD in basic or health sciences. • MD or DDS also acceptable. • Minimum of 0-2 years of relevant experience in a research environment. Physical Abilities • Ability to work at a surgical microscope in order to complete animal microsurgical procedures. • Ability to work with laboratory animals of various species (e.g. rodent, canine). Other duties as assigned. Hours of work may vary depending upon the demands of the study and the needs of the institution. The research fellowship is aimed at individuals who are interested in academic careers in the fields of obesity and diabetes research. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a world class research facility that focuses on chronic diseases and nutrition, with focus on obesity and diabetes.
