Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow, Fish Nutrition, Fort Pierce, FL.
With over 30,000 students from all 50 states and over 180 countries, 21 intercollegiate teams, 180 plus degree programs, and an administration that thrives on discovery and excellence, FAU is pushing the boundaries of higher education. Florida Atlantic's faculty and staff are trailblazers and innovators with a passion for finding creative solutions while advancing science, art, and technology in all disciplines. Our work environment is a hub of cultures from across the nation and the world, making FAU a place where collaboration flourishes.
Research of fish nutrition will be conducted to improve reliability and efficiency of seed stock production. New feed formulations and information pertaining to nutrient availability, including ingredients from non- traditional feedstuffs, will be incorporated. Dietary additives or feed formulations that may improve reproductive performance of broodstock and the growth, quality, and health of fry, fingerlings and food fish will be evaluated. Experimental improvement of optimum feeding strategies for the different phases of production, seed stock especially, will also be investigated.
Specific objectives include:
(1) Develop improved larviculture methods for sustainable production of high-value warm water marine finfish
(2) Develop optimal methods for eliminating the requirement for live feeds technology for larviculture of Florida Pompano and Red Drum
(3) Determine nutrient requirements and develop feeding strategies and diets for optimal growth, efficiency, and reproductive success of warm water marine fish larvae and juveniles.
Research methodologies include techniques to:
(1) Manufacture diets and evaluate the effects of ingredient or feed manipulation on nutritional value of diet
(2) Analyze chemical and biochemical components of feeds
(3) Measure digestibility, nutrient utilization and retention, and satiation feeding
(4) Develop unique feed ingredients by biological (i.e. enzymatic, chemical or fungal fermentation), chemical or mechanical modifications to improve nutrient profile and reduce or eliminate anti-nutritional factors.
The research is expected to determine nutrient requirements and develop feeding strategies and diets for optimal growth, efficiency, and reproductive success of warm water marine fish larvae and juveniles. Optimum feed production techniques that maximize the intake, consumption, and utilization of nutrients, and optimize growth and health in genetically improved fish strains are expected to be identified.
Minimum Qualifications:
Recent Ph.D. (within the last 8 years) from an accredited institution in fish physiology, fish nutrition, biochemistry, developmental biology, or animal nutrition required by time of appointment.
Knowledge of the principles, theories, methodologies and techniques of molecular biology or biochemistry.
Preferred demonstrated knowledge of the biological sciences with a background in aquatic sciences, fisheries science, or aquaculture.
