The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit an outstanding research fellow in the field of applied cryptography and data security for a full-time position. This is a fixed-term appointment for upto 36 months. The expected start is October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The post holder will be contributing to two EU-funded research projects “Future Proofing of ICT Trust Chains: Sustainable Operational Assurance and Verification Remote Guards for Systems-of-Systems Security and Privacy” (the project short name is ASSURED) and “SECurity And privacy protectioN in Internet of Things devices” (the project short name is SECANT).

The main responsibility of the post holder will be in the design and development of new cryptographic protocols for secure data processing, including attribute-based access control, encrypted data storage, data sharing and search over encrypted data, using advanced encryption techniques and distributed ledger technologies.

The Department of Computer Science has a world-class reputation in cyber security and regularly publishes at top-level conferences and journals. The Department is home to Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS) which is only one of four in the UK holding recognition as an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research and Education by the UK government. SCCS has world- leading research expertise in applied cryptography, trusted computing, privacy and authentication, secure communications, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, and security verification. The Centre includes 14 academics across two research groups: Secure Systems and Distributed and Networked Systems, with around 30 research associates and PhD students. SCCS is leading the recently established Surrey Security Network through which cross- disciplinary research agenda in cyber security is delivered across the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering and other University faculties. SCCS maintains close links with leading industries, the public sector and governmental bodies, leading to a strong heritage of real-world impact.

The position offers the platform for the research fellow to develop skills to become an independent researcher. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor Liqun Chen and Dr Mark Manulis. The research fellow will also work with the other colleagues of the SCCS and collaborate with the other partners of the ASSURED project consortium and the SECANT project consortium.

We are looking for applicants that demonstrate strong research and protocol design skills, have strong communication skills and enthusiasm for developing their own research ideas. Applicants should have knowledge and experience in the design of cryptographic protocols for data protection and a good understanding of distributed leger technologies. Skills in software engineering would be an advantage but willing to learn how to develop a software prototype for demonstration is acceptable.

Applicants should have a PhD (or close to completing a PhD degree) in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience.
