Position Details

Area: School of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322 with potential progression once in post to £42,792 – Please note - As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum starting salary that can be offered is £33,797. Background

The Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage (BCES) is recruiting three highly motivated researchers to join a successful research team at the University of Birmingham. BCES is a cross-campus centre with its hub in the School of Chemical Engineering. It is part of the Birmingham Energy Institute with activities covering both fundamental and applied research in novel materials, devices and systems of thermal and chemical energy conversion and storage, multiscale modelling, process scale-up and materials manufacturing (https: // www. birmingham.ac.uk/energystorage).

This post is part of the team working on two EPSRC recently awarded projects (EP/V041665/1 and EP/V042033/1) on advanced heating/cooling decarbonisation technologies, in collaboration with the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh, and UCL. The post holder will work closely with researchers across the project consortiums, and mainly contribute to the new approach of formulation and scale-up manufacturing of composite material, which will be integrated into conventional and chemical heat pumps for system level improvement and evaluation. The post holder will also have opportunities to visit oversea collaborators (secondment) and the travel expense will be fully covered by a H2020 RISE project CO-COOL: https: // cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101007976

Summary of Role

The Research Fellow is expected to contribute to the new approach development for the formulation and scale-up manufacturing of composite thermal energy storage materials, including both composite phase change materials and composite thermochemical materials. The post holder will focus on materials formulation, performance enhancement, characterisation, and manufacturing. S/he will also contribute to publications, new grant proposal writing, and PhD student supervision.

Main Duties

The main duties and responsibilities of post holders are given in the following:

• Conduct own and original research • To formulate, characterise and optimise particulate composite phase change materials (cPCMs) and particulate composite thermochemical materials (cTCMs) for thermal energy storage and conversion applications • To investigate the surface coating/treatment of the formulated particulate composite for performance enhancement • To develop and validate scale-up fabrication technologies, and measurement of mechanical and thermal properties under different conditions, particularly the relevant conditions for heat pump applications • To enhance properties and performance of the formulated materials through proactive collaborations with other team members and external collaborators working on related processes and systems • To interactions with both academic and industrial collaborators in the project teams, and building internal & external contacts and networks • To help with training PhD students and other group members who are working on similar areas • To disseminate the research through journal and conference publications • To organise project review meetings and seminars • To supervise student's projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels • To assist supervisors to train researchers and students new to the laboratories and to ensure the laboratories to meet health and safety requirements • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

Essential

• A first degree in materials science/engineering, particle technology, chemistry/chemical engineering, or other related science/engineering discipline, and a PhD (or near to completion) or equivalent experience and qualifications in an area related to the main research responsibilities outlined above • A solid background in fundamentals related composite thermal energy storage materials • A high level of knowledge in materials formulation, characterisation and optimisation • Demonstrable prior experience and track record in areas closely related to the main research responsibilities • Ability to communicate complex information clearly • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly

Desirable

• An ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively • Demonstrable hands on experiences in fabrication of composite materials and scale-up of manufacturing processes • Knowledge of surface engineering, absorption and adsorption and materials chemistry will be an advantage
