Reports to the principal investigator (PI). Completes work with specific instructions on routine or semi-routine research protocols and/or within established work parameters for the unit. Makes decisions or choices following standard practices and procedures. Performs professional work requiring general knowledge and basic application and use of concepts, theories, terminology, and practices. Experience in natural product chemistry techniques including sample extraction, isolation of compounds using chromatography (column and liquid), and compound quantification/ characterization. Executes biological experiments to assess mechanisms and therapeutic potential of natural product compounds derived from medicinal plants, plant foods, or bacteria in relevant in vitro and in vivo models of disease under minimum supervision from the PI. Experienced in or willing to learn rodent models. Cell tissue culture and molecular biology techniques including RNA/DNA/protein extraction, PCR, and RT-PCR. Collects, sorts, processes samples, performs preliminary analysis, and analyzes final data. Performs data analysis using bioinformatics tools and statistics as required. Assists in training of undergraduate, graduate students, and other postdocs. Keeps records of work performed and analyzes data including statistical analysis. Assists in the preparation of manuscripts, prepares figures and graphs for publications, grant proposals, and presentations. Reviews work with the PI on a regular basis and presents work to other members of the research group at lab meetings. Maintains laboratory equipment and helps inventory of supplies.

Minimum Education and Experience

PhD degree in relevant area of biological sciences is preferred. Conduct of laboratory experiments, identification of bioactive compounds in raw plant extracts through spectrophotometry and chromatography. RNA extraction and RT- PCR quantification, conduct of in vitro and in vivo experiments with rodent models, analysis of data, maintenance of accurate records, communication of results to PI, training of students, maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires specialized knowledge on methods for cell culture, phytochemisty, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, western blotting, protein assay, enzyme activity, ELISA, genotyping, gel electrophoresis, cell viability, transformation/transfection. Requires knowledge of the biological effects of nutrition and phytochemicals on the genetic, molecular and physiological aspects of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Equipment Utilized

Will use all of the typical laboratory equipment for biochemical, cellular and molecular biology experiments. Will use Excel spreadsheets, Word processing software, and graphing and statistical analysis software.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to lift 20 pounds, and to have direct contact with rodents.

Overview

Execution of biological experiments, cell culture, DNA/RNA extraction, qRT- PCR, western blotting, protein assay, enzyme activity, ELISA, genotyping, gel electrophoresis, cell viability, transduction and transfection. Extraction, isolation, quantification, and characterization of bioactive compounds from plant extracts through various methods of spectrophotometry and chromatography. Develops methods for concentration, stabilization and delivery of polyphenols. Assists in the management of a mouse colony and in conducting of in-vivo studies in rodent models. Handles mice including gavaging, tissue collection and analysis. Conducts RNA extraction and RT-PCR quantification from raw animal tissue. Responsible for analyzing raw data, and entering the data into notebooks and/or electronic database formats. Organizes sample preparation protocols requiring numerous steps, data analysis and data interpretation. Responsible for troubleshooting procedures and protocols to ensure achieving desired results, e.g. sample preparation, analytical repeatability, data analysis and data interpretation. Assists other lab members in conducting in vitro and in vivo studies. Expected outcomes are high quality results suitable for publication and documentation in peer reviewed journals and for support of grant applications.

Keeps records of work, analyzes data, assists in the preparation of manuscripts for publications. Responsible for coherent documentation to enable effective analysis. A legibly written continually updated laboratory notebook is required. Maintains laboratory equipment, hazardous waste removal, keeps inventory of supplies. Expected outcome is a proper adherance to all health and safety inspection protocols and regulations. Will be assisting in training students, postdocs, and other part-time hourly personnel in experimental techniques and the proper use of equipment and machinery in the laboratory. Expected outcome is an efficiently run experimental procedure with reliable results.

Statement

Assist PI in: 1) conduct of research projects in areas of nutrition, gut microbiota, and metabolic syndrome; 2) preparing research reports and manuscripts for publications in journals; and assisting in preparation of research protocols and proposals; 3) conducting experiments with rodents; 4) keeping the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and safe manner in accordance with established procedures and maintaining lab instruments in operational condition; 5) assist in training students through various laboratory related activities.

Special Instructions to Applicants

This is a grant funded position renewable up to one year contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
