Mass Spectrometry Technologist
Job Purpose
To provide comprehensive technical support on a range of projects with a biological, biomedical and clinical focus that involve the identification and quantification of proteins, metabolites and lipids by LC-MS/MS. Provide specialist technical expertise in the relevant field and be responsible for the planning, design, delivery and safe operation of specialist technical resources to optimise research output.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI):
1. Operate and maintain high resolution LC-MS/MS systems.
2. To develop and validate untargeted LC-MS based proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic methods.
3. To lead and undertake the processing, complex statistical analysis and interpretation of data sets and present findings clearly to research group including proposals for action/mitigation. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
4. Undertake specialist technical aspects of assigned research including taking a leading role in the planning and conduct of research objectives in accordance with individual and/or joint project deliverables.
5. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/Institute/School and external industrial partners to enhance the delivery of the research projects.
6. Lead and contribute to the writing of reports and manuscripts in consultation with the PI. Maintain complex and/or high volume databases and records, creating technical/progress reports and papers.
7. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project and subject area and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.
8. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
9. Participate and led on team/group meetings/seminars/workshops to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the Institute.
10. Responsible for supervising and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students and technician across the projects as directed by the PI.
11. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and Institute, including budgets/expenditure.
12. Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of laboratory and/or experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.
14. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
15. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
16. Troubleshoot complex technical problems, including issues in the design and operation of technical resources and/or with data which is generated.
17. To undertake any other duties as assigned from time to time by the PI and/or line manager.
These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) in chemistry, biochemistry or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Extensive and up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge of high- resolution liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry.
A3 Knowledge of proteomic, metabolomic or lipidomic workflows.
Desirable:
B1 Understanding of Intellectual Property protection.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Skilled in the application of high-resolution LC-MS/MS approaches to characterise and quantify proteins, metabolites or lipids.
C2 Processing and interpretation of LC-MS data sets.
C3 Research creativity and strong cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.
C4 Highly motivated, ability to use initiative and quick to learn new techniques.
C5 Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely.
C6 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.
C7 Willingness and aptitude to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
C8 Appropriate workload and time management skills.
C9 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate.
C10 Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.
C11 Good team leadership skills including demonstrable supervisory skills.
Desirable:
D1 Familiarity with Orbitrap mass spectrometers and associated operating systems.
D2 Use of bioinformatic and statistical software with proteomic, metabolomic or lipidomic data sets.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of the application of mass spectrometry approaches to characterise and quantify proteins, metabolites or lipids.
E2 Experience of scientific writing.
E3 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
E4 A track record of presentation and publication of research results.
E5 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities.
E6 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of papers.
Desirable:
F1 Experience in the operation and maintenance of Oribitrap mass spectrometers
Standard Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Technical & Specialist Grade, level 7, £36,382 - £40,927 per annum.
This post will be offered on a full time, open ended basis with funding available until 31 March 2022.
