Successful delivery of such systems will have revolutionary impact on drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and industrial biotechnology.

Summary of Role • To undertake research into ultrasonic levitation systems including their design, finite element modelling, construction, characterisation, integration with optical detection, and application under the supervision of DrRuchi Gupta. • To support research within the group to solve problems, collaborate and innovate in scientific directions for the group. • To produce regular written and oral reports pertaining to the projects as requested; attend regular project and group meetings; give regular presentations to the group and collaborators; attend national and international conferences giving poster and oral presentations; write papers for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals, proof reading of papers and reports. • To supervise research students, be responsible for installation and maintenance of equipment and training of personnel on equipment.

Main Duties/Responsibilities • Analyse and interpret data • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding • Contribute to developing ideas, directions, research objectives, models, techniques, and methods • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc. • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research related administration • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the research group, School, College, and the University, often under supervision of a project leader • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research • Deal with the problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

erson Specification • Completed a PhD (or be near to completion) in Engineering, or equivalent qualifications • Significant experience in designing and building ultrasonic systems particularly, those for levitation of droplets and/or particles • Some experience in modelling acoustic levitators using finite element modelling packages such as COMSOL Multiphysics. • Experience in designing optical and electronics instrumentation, and analytical systems is highly desirable. • Interest in interdisciplinary research and willingness to learn new techniques. • Ability to keep up to date with new developments in the fields relevant to own research projects • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, both as a leader and team member, on research programmes. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary project area of research. • Ability to initiate, plan, organise, implement, and deliver programmes of research work to tight deadlines. • Ability to write and give presentations to both national and international audience standard and communicate complex information clearly. • Ability to install and maintain relevant equipment and to train other personnel on operation of the broad range of equipment maintained within the group • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
