We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) position in the School of Social Work, Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University, closely working with Dr. Haorui Wu, Canada Research Chair in Disaster and Resilience, on an umbrella research project entitled: Building a Culture of Community Resilience: Establishing a Social Research Infrastructure for Hazards and Disaster Studies.

The PDF will assist with various research projects, exploring hazards and disaster research resources and educational resources, and disasters' diverse impacts across Canada and beyond. These projects include community-based disaster efforts, resident-driven vulnerability reduction, community social development, community resilience and sustainability. Job responsibilities include both qualitative and quantitative research assistance. Depending on qualifications, the research activities could consist of stakeholder engagement, data analysis, creating spatial visualizations of data in ArcGIS, summarizing literature, finding data, summarizing legislation, drafting policy briefs, developing surveys/questionnaires in Qualtrics, etc.

The position will offer a unique postdoctoral training experience. The PDF will thrive in a start-up atmosphere by being flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, managing multiple tasks efficiently, and being a team player. Based in the School of Social Work, the PDF will be part of a transdisciplinary team from various institutes across Canada and internationally. The postdoctoral research associate will be encouraged to publish extensively, develop advanced technical skills, strengthen their research portfolios, gain expertise in authoring grant proposals, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and conduct domestic and international field research, depending on their interests and prior experience.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

Requirements:

A doctoral degree in social science or a related field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Geography, Public Health, Sociology, Social Work, Urban Planning, and Urban Studies) focusing on hazards and disaster research. Candidates who are ABD will be considered and the doctoral degree must be officially awarded on or before the starting date;

Demonstrated proficiency in social science research methods (both quantitative and qualitative), including designing and analyzing quantitative surveys as well as conducting and analyzing interviews and focus groups;

Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills for both professionals and the general public; and

Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Qualifications:

Evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations in hazards and disaster research, practice, and policymaking;

Preference is given to candidates that have familiarity with Qualtrics, GIS, or other data visualization and graphic design tools; and

Experience working and living in a multi-cultural environment and demonstrated cultural sensitivity.

Salary Range/Pay Rate $50,000 per year (plus benefits). Dalhousie University offers a competitive benefits package. Additional Information
