ENERGY SYSTEMS POLICY RESEARCH FELLOW – 98231
Position Details
School of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,406 to £40,927 with potential progression once in post to £43,434 Grade 7 Full Time Fixed-term for up to 19 months Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK Closing Date: 6 October 2021
Background
The Energy Systems and Policy Analysis Group takes an interdisciplinary approach to research, providing evidence that can inform decision-making across scales. We consider techno-economic analysis, policy impacts and institutional structures in energy systems.
This role focuses on the integration of technologies into local energy systems for the decarbonisatjon of industrial processes and heat in the UK, considering energy infrastructure and policy. The position requires an individual with a high-level of analytical capability who can demonstrate good knowledge of energy technologies, policy and energy system scenarios. Experience of participatory methods for stakeholder engagement would be an advantage.
Role Purpose
This role focuses on the integration of energy technologies and infrastructure as part of the transition to net zero, considering policy and economic factors, particularly at a local level.
Summary of Role
• Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids • Operate within area of specialism • Analyse and interpret research findings and results • Contribute to generating funding • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar
Main Duties/Responsibilities
• Conduct own and original research • Energy systems analysis in the period to 2030, focusing on heat and industrial decarbonisation. • Policy analysis of local energy systems, in the UK and internationally. • Gather and interpret data for analysis. • Engagement with stakeholders to inform analysis and policy recommendations. • Maintain strong links with energy storage technology development, and contribute to the research effort at the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required • Contribute to writing bids for research funding • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research- related administration • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project • Prepare research findings for publication, research seminars etc • Present research outputs, for example at seminars and as posters • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification
• First degree and hold, or be close to completing a PhD in an area related to energy systems, or equivalent qualifications • High level analytical capability, with knowledge of characteristics of energy technologies and infrastructure. • Good knowledge of energy policy/regulation, and energy system scenarios. • Experience in participatory methods and stakeholder engagement approaches would be an advantage • Ability to communicate complex information clearly for academic and wider publication • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
