An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Penfield Group at the John Innes Centre, working on cutting-edge science in the field of Crop Genetics.
About the John Innes Centre:
The John Innes Centre is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant science, genetics and microbiology. We nurture a creative, curiosity led approach to answering fundamental questions in bioscience, and translate that knowledge into societal benefits.
Our employees enjoy access to state-of-the-art technology and a diverse range of specialist training opportunities, including support for leadership and management. Click here to find out more about working at the John Innes Centre.
About the Penfield Group:
The Penfield group works to understand how weather and climate affect plant reproductive development and seed quality. They are especially interested in the effects of temperature on crop yields, seed quality and seedling establishment.
Their work uses crop species from the Brassica family, especially oilseed rape (canola) and vegetable Brassicas, as well as model species such as Arabidopsis thaliana. In this way they aim to understand precise mechanisms by which weather and climate affect crop performance, and consider strategies for increasing crop resilience, for instance using conventional plant breeding or genome editing techniques.
The project aims to understand the molecular mechanisms by which winter warming is affecting reproductive development and yield in winter oilseed rape. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in an interdisciplinary group using cutting edge technologies to understand how changing temperatures affect plant and seed development, and crop performance.
The role:
Working as part of a team led by Prof Steve Penfield, you will work on understanding crop yield responses to winter warming.
The post holder will use molecular biology, plant physiology and genomic approaches to plant breeding to further our understanding of the impacts of changing winter temperatures on reproductive development and yield.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in molecular biology, crop science, genomics. You will also work with world leading scientists who are experts in their field.
The ideal candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a PhD (full award or expected within 6 months) or equivalent in plant sciences or related discipline. You will have knowledge of advanced molecular biology techniques, including chromatin immunoprecipitation and RNA sequencing, and be familiar with genomic approaches to plant science. Previous experience working with transgenic plants is essential.
Additional information:
The post is available for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of further extension.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be submitted by email to Professor Steven Penfield.
