Job description

The CRUK Beatson Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.
A postdoctoral research position is available within the laboratory of Dr Thomas MacVicar to explore the mechanisms of mitochondrial metabolic reprogramming in cancer. Mitochondria are essential organelles that exchange numerous metabolites with the rest of the cell across the mitochondrial inner membrane. We will investigate how regulated mitochondrial metabolite transport supports tumour development and stubborn therapeutic resistance in difficult- to-treat cancers including pancreatic cancer. We will employ a combination of genetic screening techniques and genetically engineered murine models of pancreatic cancer to reveal and exploit metabolic vulnerabilities in tumours. These studies will be supported by the expertise in cancer metabolism and in vivo models of cancer available within the Beatson Institute.
Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field, be driven by scientific curiosity and enjoy working as part of a positive and inclusive team. Applicants must have experience in mitochondrial biology and/or cancer metabolism, while experience with CRISPR screening and tissue culture/in vivo tumour models would be of benefit but is not essential.
To find out more about this exciting opportunity to establish advanced skills and to uncover the secrets of mitochondrial metabolism in cancer please contact Dr Thomas MacVicar by email via t.macvicar@beatson.gla.ac.uk
The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute is committed to increase the number of female scientists at this level and encourages female applicants to apply. We have a highly attractive, innovative maternity policy, which includes providing a postdoc with support and funding so that their projects can continue during their maternity leave.
Closing Date for Applications: 30 th November 2021
