Background
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.
The School of Mathematics aims to provide a supportive and friendly environment for staff to develop as researchers and lecturers. The School is a supportive and people-focused friendly environment, committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity. We encourage applications from the widest community and provide equal opportunities in our recruitment processes. The School of Mathematics holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award. Athena SWAN is a national initiative that recognises the advancement of gender equality, representation, progression and success for all in academia. The School also supports the London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme, whose aim is to support mathematics departments to embed equal opportunities for women within their working practices, and is a member of the Piscopia which forms a UK-community of women and non-binary students and mathematics researchers. The University of Birmingham holds the Advance HE's Race Equality Charter Bronze award, a framework through which we are working to self-reflect, identify and remove barriers standing in the way of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.
The University of Birmingham Geometry and Mathematical Physics Group started in 2018 and has grown rapidly to have 5 permanent research faculty members, 3 postdoctoral researchers and 5 PhD students. We aim to support all early career researchers in their research careers and career development in a positive environment where they can work in a comfortable environment with open discussions.
Role Summary
There are 2 posts available, one to work with Dr Tyler Kelly and the other to work with Prof Marta Mazzocco in the School of Mathematics. The first position is funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship "Open Mirror Geometry for Landau-Ginzburg Models," and the second position is funded by the Leverhulme Trust Project Research Grant "Extended Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence, Quantum Curves and Mirror Symmetry."
Applicants will be expected to hold or be close to obtaining a PhD or equivalent qualification(s) in one of the following subjects: Algebraic Geometry, Symplectic Geometry, Mirror Symmetry, Mathematical Physics, Noncommutative Geometry, Integrable Systems, Enumerative Geometry, Representation Theory or a related area of mathematics.
The successful candidate will join the new Birmingham Geometry and Mathematical Physics Group. the profile and research interests of this group may be found at: https: // www. birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/mathematics/pure- maths/geometry-mathematical-physics.aspx
You will be expected to work in collaboration with either Dr Tyler Kelly or Prof Marta Mazzocco as well as manage your own research projects. You will conduct academic research and administrative activities, collaborate with other members of the group or more broadly, and help foster a positive research culture. There may be some teaching opportunities for the research associate once in post, but teaching will not be a focus in this position.
