The Department of Economy and Society at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg announces one position as post-doctoral scholar, located at the unit of innovation and entrepreneurship. The post-doctoral scholar will be an important member of our new international center, U-GOT KIES and participate in on-going international research projects. The unit offers single-subject courses at the Bachelor´s level, two Master´s programmes (MSc in Innovation and Industrial Management; MSc in Knowledge-based Entrepreneurship, and doctoral education.

The post-doctoral scholar will be part of a larger team studying knowledge creation and knowledge transfer between large and entrepreneurial firms and between firms and universities. Professor McKelvey's Distinguished Professors Program, financed for 10 years by the Swedish Research Council is the research group, within which this person will work. Including a group of scholars at the department and internationally, the post-doctoral scholar will be part of her research programme on knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial ecosystems. This Distinguished Professor's Program has three specific goals: 1) Conceptualize knowledge intensive entrepreneurial ecosystems; 2) Analyze empirically the dynamic relationships involving collective and individual action between knowledge intensive entrepreneurs (as individuals) and the surrounding institutions, firms and organizations; and 3) Explain changes in these knowledge- intensive entrepreneurial ecosystems over time.

Subject area description

Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management of Intellectual Assets is a subject to analyse and explain innovation processes, their determinants and social and economic outcomes.

Job assignments

This project will study how and why university incubators contribute to regional entrepreneurial development. The focus is upon analyzing these processes whereby university incubators do and can stimulate entrepreneurs which are active within knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems bounded by technology and regions in a global world. The first sub-project is conducted by gathering data based on a design of a comparative quantitative analysis between two innovation ecosystems. One of which should be an ecosystem sector which is primarily based upon natural resource and the second one which is heavily dependent upon advanced engineering technologies, such as AI. This quantitative research design will be followed up by a second sub-project which strives to verify the quantitative results through a pilot case study design, preferably across Nordic countries. The project tasks are thus multi-method, which includes collecting large amounts of data and also conducting quantitative analysis, with this specified comparison as well as interviews and qualitative research design.

Qualifications

We are looking for a person who has the following qualifications: 1) A PhD degree within the subject of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management of Intellectual Assets or a related subject. For applicants with PhD degree and thesis specialization from a related subject, there will be an evaluation of the correspondence of the subject and if application, an evaluation of foreign degrees as to whether or not they correspond to the Swedish degree and subject, and 2) A PhD degree awarded within 3 years from the deadline to apply for the position. Note that persons who have been awarded a PhD degree more than 3 years ago may also be evaluated as qualified, if there are particular reasons as defined in documents referred to below. Particular reasons include the following: leave of absence due to illness, duties in Swedish defense agencies, union representation, student associations, parental leave and similar situations.

Particularly important in the evaluation of the qualifications of the applicants is that they are currently active in research and innovation in innovation and entrepreneurship, with an evolutionary economics and Schumpeterian perspective on entrepreneurship and about recent trends such as digital innovation, innovation ecosystems and incubators creating relationships between university and industry.

The applicant should have demonstrated a high level of proficiency and documented experience of the qualitative and quantitative research methods, which are relevant for the specific project in this research program. Examples of interesting methods include regressions; network analysis; text analysis and topic modelling. The applicant must have documented experience dealing with lareg-scale datasets and also experience with statistical programs, explicitly one or all of R, Stata, SPSS as well as Pyton. The applicant should also have a proven interest in quantitative methods, including previous skills and experience such as experience in conducting interviews, and coding responses relative to theory.

Personal suitability is of high importance for the appointment of employment. For the position it is important to have the ability to co- operate with colleagues in the larger research programme. You should be able to work independently as well as in a team. There will be an evaluation of the applicants' ability to collaborate both internally and with external actors in order to be able to conduct the job assignments as considered qualified for the position.

Qualified is the person who masters social scientific English in speech and writing. The level of proficiency defined here is English language requirement of English 6/English B from Swedish upper secondary school or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test. Mastery of Swedish language has an extra merit value, because it is important for the position, specifically Swedish which corresponds to Svenska 3 from Swedish upper secondary school or else ”Svenskasomandraspråk 3”. Applicants who are not native speakers will be expected to learn Swedish within two years.

Employment

The employment is a temporary employment during two years with an extent of 100 % of full time, located at the Unit of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Department of Economy and Society, University of Gothenburg.

The project and position as post-doctoral research scholar is primarily aimed towards giving individuals who have recently received their PhD degree the possibility to develop their scientific skills through a concentration on research. The job assignment is primarily oriented towards engaging in research and will, at maximum 20% of the employment, also include teaching and other duties.

The decision regarding employment as post-doctoral scholar is regulated by the collective employment agreement, “Avtal om tidsbegränsadanställningsompostdoktor”.

Starting date is 1 March 2022 or upon agreement.
