Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,406 to £40,927, with potential progression once in post to £43,434

Background

To evaluate the activity of a metabolic therapy against a spectrum of cancer models

Summary of Role

The Mussai-De Santo laboratory at the University of Birmingham has demonstrated that tumour cells have increased metabolic requirements. Targeting of tumour cell metabolism can lead to decreased cell proliferation and tumour cell death.

In this project the candidate will investigate the potential of targeting an alternative metabolic pathway using a therapeutic enzyme or inhibitor cultured with target cells in vitro.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

Duties specific to this project will include • Culture and maintenance of human cancer cell lines in vitro • Drug dilution and cell culture treatments • Handling and processing of primary human blood/ tumour sample • Magnetic Cell sorting of target cell propulations • Multi-colour flow cytometry for cell surface markers, intracellular markers, assays for cell viability and proliferation • Standard molecule biology techniques (e.g. ELISA, Western Blotting, qPCR) • Measurement of target metabolite concentration by colorimetric assays

General responsibilities may include • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required • Analyse and interpret data • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

• First degree in area of biological specialism is mandatory • Ability to competently use core laboratory techniques (not limited to) tissue culture, flow cytometry immunophenotyping, human blood and tissue cell separation and isolation (Lymphoprep and MACS sorting), ELISA, Western Blotting, and molecular biology is mandatory • High level analytical capability • Ability to communicate complex information clearly • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
