Bowdoin College Counseling Service is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to join the Counseling Staff comprised of three psychologists, two licensed professional counselors, three part time psychiatric providers, and 1-2 pre- doctoral or masters level interns. This is a 9-month position that will begin in August of 2018 and conclude in May of 2019. This positon has a competitive salary and full benefits. The position will allow a candidate to train as a staff clinician with a highly experienced, cross culturally diverse, dynamic, team-oriented, and highly committed clinical staff. The post-doctoral fellow will receive supervision and training opportunities and will assist the Director of Training as needed. In addition, the fellow will participate in co-leading and facilitating groups and outreach activities.
The Counseling Service is committed to providing the highest level of counseling/clinical care for students with adjunctive services and programming from a cross-cultural and mindfulness based perspective. The fellow is expected to engage fully in three essential areas of service: individual counseling with students; outreach consultations to the college community; and crisis management that includes evening and weekend on call coverage. We are looking for individuals who have a vision of how they could contribute to the diversity of our campus community; offer a new and innovative perspective to the programming currently offered by our college counseling service; and who have demonstrated the ability to follow through with their vision.
Education/Skills Requirements
Applicants must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree or are within several months of doing so by the start of the fellowship. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. A sense of humor. Ability to work well with a team of clinical professionals (including consulting psychiatrists, a substance abuse therapist, and neuropsychologists) as well as with staff and faculty. A strong capacity for self-reflection and commitment to hearing and acting upon feedback from supervisors, colleagues and clients. Demonstrated understanding of how personal identity specific to race, gender, social class, disability, religion, and LGTQ status intersects with psychological health and well-being of students.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Applicants possessing a year or more of counseling center experience with an interest in training masters or pre-doctoral interns will be given the highest priority. Expertise and experience in working with substance abuse issues, eating disorders, and mindfulness-based stress management is preferred. Multicultural competence, including but not limited to experience and expertise in working with students of color, students from lower income backgrounds, first generation college students, and LGBTQ students, is a must. Additionally, a commitment to feminist psychology, integrating mindfulness and psychotherapy, psychology of men and masculinity, sports psychology, DBT, CBT, and/or short-term models of psychotherapy would augment the Counseling Center's current areas of emphasis.
Standard Work Days and Hours
This is a 9-month position that will begin in August of 2022 and conclude in May of 2023. This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements. Typical hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm but evening and weekend on call coverage is required. This position will be eligible for consideration for an additional academic term appointment.
