Position Description
The Bergelson lab at NYU Biology is looking for a highly motivated and independent individual to work as a Postdoctoral Associate.
This position is for a post-PhD trainee preparing for a research scientist career path. The planned position will provide a transition to career independence through the development of professional skills; supervision by senior scientist incorporating individual development plan in support of training goals and those of faculty mentor; and publication of research findings/scholarship during postdoc appointment period.
Projects in the Bergelson lab investigate the ecology and evolution of plant–pathogen interactions, focusing primarily on Arabidopsis thaliana and its relatives, and the bacteria that reside within them. The approach is interdisciplinary, drawing upon tools from molecular genetics, molecular evolution, ecological and evolutionary theory, computation, field biology, chemistry, and population genetics to understand how ecological interactions shape evolutionary dynamics.
The research responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Associate will primarily focus on the application of joint genome-wide association (GWA) mapping to interrogate the outcomes of intra- and inter-species interactions in planta among strains of common pathogenic and commensal bacteria of Arabidopsis thaliana. Specific focal areas and techniques may include further development and implementation of ultra high-throughput methods to enable sufficiently large-scale inoculation and phenotyping assays, computational and statistical analyses, and validation of candidate loci whose genotypes interact across strains to mediate co-infection outcomes.
This position is supported by a collaborative grant, which seeks to use the lens of evolutionary ecology and genetics to understand the assembly of plant phyllosphere communities and the mechanisms through which they affect plant health. The overarching project embraces the complexity of these communities, and it aims to explain real-world patterns through experimental observations of interactions between host, pathogen, and commensal genotypes. The Postdoctoral Associate will actively participate in these collaborative efforts among an international team.
Salary Range: $65,000
Qualifications
Position Requirements The ideal candidate will hold a PhD and have at least three years of postdoctoral experience ; have prior research experience in microbiology and plant biology, molecular genetics (e.g., genetic transformation or gene editing), the design and implementation of high-throughput techniques, the use of R or other computing environments for data manipulation and statistical analysis, the implementation of statistical analyses for experimental, quantitative genetic, and/or comparative genomic datasets, a firm grounding in ecological and evolutionary theory, experience working on interactions among bacteria, and a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
