Postdoc position – Phosphoproteomics based studies of cell signalling

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Institute of Molecular Systems Biology at ETH Zurich is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Pedro Beltrao.

Project background

The group of Prof. Beltrao has a long standing interest in the study of protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their regulatory systems with a specific focus on protein phosphorylation and kinase regulation. While regulation by phosphorylation has been studied for decades, only recently we do have the technologies to detect and measure changes in phosphorylation sites at the whole cell level. However, we lack an understanding of how PTMs and their regulatory systems operate beyond some highly studied examples. The majority of PTM positions and most of the enzyme regulators remain to be studied, indicating that our knowledge of these systems remains highly incomplete and biased. Our group has been developing methods to study, in large scale, the evolution of phospho-regulation (Studer et al. Science 2016; Bradley et al. PLoS Bio 2019), the functional relevance of phosphorylation sites (Viéitez et al. Nat Biotech 2021; Ochoa et al. Nat Biotech 2020) and the reconstruction of kinase signalling circuits (Invergo et al. Cell Systems 2020).

Job description

Applicants with a background in mass spectrometry are invited to develop (phospho)proteomics based research projects that will contribute to a better understanding of eukaryotic protein phospho-regulation at the level of the whole cell. Areas of interest in the lab include: the function and evolution of phosphorylation; the dynamics and regulatory principles of kinase circuits; the context dependent changes in kinase circuits; and the dysregulation phospho-regulation in disease.

Your profile

Doctoral degree in cell signalling using mass spectrometry based proteomics

Proactive personality, excellent communication skills and capacity to work with a diverse group of people

Strong background in mass spectrometry is required

Working experience with high-throughput approaches and large number of samples is preferred

Experience with phosphoproteomics and cell signalling is preferred

Experience with S. cerevisiae or mammalian systems is preferred

Further, any expertise in programming is of advantage

We offer

You will have access to a dedicated MS instrument and be part of a team of scientists with diverse expertise, including yeast genetics and cutting-edge development of computational approaches in the area of cell signalling.
