Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The AI Decision-Making Research program at the UNC School of Law is dedicated to the study of issues related to the deployment of decision-making tools in all spheres of life including, criminal justice, education, employment, health, government, politics, etc. The goal of the AI-DR program is to train law students that will be well versed in the ethical and legal issues surrounding automated decision-making goals and to equip students with the technical savvy and legal knowledge to participate in the regulatory and policy governance of such systems.

Position Summary

The UNC School of Law is hiring two Visiting Fellows (Post-Doc Research Associates) who will conduct automated decision-making research to address all areas of the program's work including addressing the ethical and regulatory issues associated with AI or automated decision-making. Some areas of specific interest include: use of AI in educational settings, use of AI in business-decision-making, particularly to monitor employees, use of AI in the health sector, etc.

Candidates for this position should have a strong academic background and should have a J.D. and/or a Ph.D. in one of the following fields: Social Psychology, Computer Science, etc. Candidates should have prior publications in law review journals, excellent verbal and written communications skills, be self-directed, can manage multiple assignments simultaneously and work with people with diverse perspectives and positions, and exhibit promising leadership potential through professional experiences or law school activities. In addition to conducting scholarly research, candidates will help in managing the program's speaker series and Hackathons organized in conjunction with major corporations. Candidates who plan to go on the academic job market are particularly encouraged to apply as candidates will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience by co-teaching two courses with the Director of the program.

This is a one-year appointment but there is a possibility of renewal for a maximum two-year term.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

J.D. and/or Ph.D. in Social Psychology, Computer Science or related fields.

Technical knowledge of AI systems.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Prior publications in law review journals.
