COLANDS Postdoctoral Fellow
Candidates are invited to apply for a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) at UBC in the Sunderland Lab. The successful candidate will take a lead role on an exciting on-going project “Collaborating to Operationalise Landscape Approaches for Nature, Development and Sustainability” (COLANDS), funded by the German government. This project is working in close collaboration with the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), the University of Amsterdam, and other partners to conduct innovative research related to sustainable landscapes, including forestry and other productive processes, as well as the essential work of engaging multiple stakeholders for better landscape-scale outcomes. The project is focused in three tropical landscapes situated in Zambia, Ghana and Indonesia. It is anticipated that some international travel will be required.
Applicants must be self-driven, motivated and be able work independently. The successful candidate will be willing to develop expertise in new fields of research related to land-use planning and biodiversity, publish scientific papers and communicate results to donors, development agencies and policy makers.
Qualifications
This position requires a PhD in forestry, conservation, environmental science or a related field. Multi-disciplinary candidates, familiar with complex socio-ecological issues, are particularly welcome.
Preference will be given to recent graduates (within the last 2 years).
Experience in at least one of the following areas is desirable: landscape-scale management, sustainable development, conservation practice, rural livelihoods.
Must have both quantitative and qualitative research skills.
Strong communication skills, a solid publication record (emphasizing quality of publications over quantity) and demonstrated leadership skills are essential.
Responsibilities
The PDF will:
Assist the PI (Dr. Sunderland) in the on-going technical implementation of the UBC component of COLANDS in three landscapes in Zambia, Ghana and Indonesia;
Complete a desktop study of the recorded biodiversity of all three sites to provide a baseline of available information and where research gaps are evident;
Work on collating data related to the impacts of COVID on the study sites over the past two years and beyond, with a view to publication in a journal paper;
Attend regular meetings with the COLANDS partners and PhD students. This may entail international travel;
Assist in the drafting of manuscripts for publication and prepare PowerPoint presentations for internal lab meetings and external conferences (e.g. FLARE, ATBC) related to the project;
Assist in the preparation of technical and progress reports as required;
Perform other lab related duties as needed, including mentoring early career researchers, assisting with the publication process and engaging the public and policy arenas through social media, blogs and other outlets.
