英国伯明翰大学2022年招聘博士后职位(无机化学)

Research Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry

University of Birmingham

Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry to perform research into the structures, intermediates and formation mechanisms of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The researcher will work with Dr Hamish Hei-Man Yeung as part of the EPSRC New Investigator Award entitled “Unlocking the Pre-Nucleation State as a Route to Materials Discovery in MOFs”. The project builds on recent research into MOF formation, in-situ measurements and understanding of the pre-nucleation state (e.g., Chemical Science 2021, 12, 4494–4502; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 566–571; Chemical Communications 2018, 54, 9651–9654; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2016, 55, 2012–2016).

For further information please contact Dr Hamish Hei-Man Yeung, h.yeung@bham.ac.uk.

Role Summary

The role will involve experimental determination of MOF crystallisation mechanisms by synthesis and characterisation of intermediates and MOF products, in-situ monitoring, and collaboration with experts in small-angle X-ray scattering, pair distribution function measurements, computational chemistry and industry.

It will also involve project management, supporting research within the research group, writing reports and papers, presentation of the project results, and public engagement.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop their experience and skills, through mentoring, professional development reviews, careers training and access to university resources and facilities.

Main Duties

• Design experiments and generate research data in the area of MOF formation. • Work in accordance with relevant safety policies and operating procedures. • Store, process and prepare data for publication in line with funders requirements. • Analyse, interpret and discuss research data and findings. • Contribute to developing new models, techniques, methods and understanding. • Contribute to writing scientific papers, reports, beamtime proposals and funding applications. • Contribute to the effective operation of the research group. • Undertake management/administration necessary to achieve the project goals and milestones. • Work effectively with other researchers and project partners, and provide guidance to students. • Present scientific findings at conferences and seminars. • Perform public engagement activities relating to the research project. • Contribute to licensing or spin-out deals resulting from the research.

Person Specification

Essential: • First degree in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics. • PhD, (or be near to completion of), or equivalent, in Chemistry or a related discipline. • Expertise in synthetic chemistry and/or crystallisation. • Significant expertise in at least one of X-ray total scattering, small-angle scattering, diffraction and/or mass spectrometry. • Ability to initiate, plan, organise, implement, and deliver a programme of research work to tight deadlines. • Ability to analyse and bring together complex datasets. • Ability to communicate complex information clearly by written language, graphical means and oral presentation. • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research group and wider collaborative team.

Desirable: • Expertise in more than one of X-ray total scattering, small-angle scattering, diffraction and/or mass spectrometry. • Experience in materials characterisation techniques, such as UV-vis, FTIR, Raman, NMR, electron microscopy, • Experience in performing and developing in-situ experiments at central facilities. • Ability to learn and apply new characterisation and analysis techniques. • Ability to develop new models, methods and/or techniques. • Experience of public engagement. • Ability to identify potential problems, assess resource requirements, seek assistance when necessary and use resources effectively to achieve the goals of the project. • Experience in small-scale project planning and management. • Experience in supporting other team members, including junior researchers. • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
