Job Posting Number 20233NTL Job Location San Marcos College McCoy College of Business Administration Department/School Finance & Economics Position Description
Education Policy Lab Overview
Education Policy Lab is actively seeking a postdoctoral scholar to be supervised by Dr. Li Feng (Professor of Economics). This position will involve interdisciplinary collaborations with the PI and her teams to conduct data analysis, publish high-quality peer-review publications, generate external research grants for funding joint research. Education Policy Lab currently has two graduate research assistants, three undergraduate research assistants, and other postdoctoral associates and faculty members actively involved in our research agenda. The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to two different National Science Foundation funded research projects.
Collaborative Research: Retention, Persistence, and Effectiveness of STEM Teachers in High-need School Districts-An Investigation of the NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship(NSF#1950292, PI/PD Li Feng, co-PI, Hunter Close; Other PIs/Co-PIs/Collaborators: Mike Hanse, David Kumar, Ann Cavallo, John Pecore, Maria Fernandez). This project involves three core research institutions (Texas State University, Florida Atlantic University, and The Brookings Institution) and four collaborating institutions with Noyce programs (Texas State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, University of West Florida, and Florida International University). The project will mine local and national databases for patterns that uncover the impact of Noyce projects on the supply of STEM teachers in the school districts they serve. The project seeks to raise awareness of challenges specific to STEM teachers in high-need settings, generate evidence-based policy solutions, and promote a better understanding of how Noyce projects influence the STEM teacher workforce.
Building Capacity: Creating Faculty-Student Communities for Culturally Relevant Institutional Change (NSF #1928696, PI Heather Galloway, Co-PIs Eleanor Close, Alice Olmstead, Cynthia Luxford, and Li Feng). During this five-year project, we aim to engage faculty and students across Texas State University's College of Science and Engineering in workshops, department instructional assessments, redesign of lower-division gateway courses, and project-level decision making. Participating STEM departments are receiving intellectual, material, and logistical support to empower faculty-student teams in developing sustainable communities of practice focused on equitable and inclusive instructional approaches. The project also involves three research strands that focus on communities of practice among faculty and students, STEM student trajectories at Texas State, and student graduation rates and STEM workforce outcomes for Texas State and other Hispanic-Serving Institutions. We are currently in year 3 of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities
The postdoc scholar will primarily focus on research and project management. In collaboration with the rest of the project teams, the selected candidate will be expected to engage in research activities such as: helping to design research plans, coordinating the research team's work, collecting data, analyzing quantitative data, conducting quantitative analyses, reviewing relevant literature, creating/amending materials for institutional review board approval, disseminating results through publications and presentations, and managing other research assistants as needed. The selected candidate will also co-mentor undergraduate or graduate research assistants. There will be joint grant writing opportunity for the postdoctoral scholar.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Preferred start date is August 2022. Initial appointment will be for one year, renewable for one more year as funding remains available. Due to the nature of the restricted- use nature of our data access, this position will be on-site and in-person only. The salary range is between $50,000-$55,000 based on experience level. The postdoctoral scholar will enjoy the full-time employee benefits. There will be additional professional development funds for travel and computing resources ($2,000).
